Home field advantage, but he's right about both Austin and Norman. What's interesting is his friendliness to other Texas locations is his correct analysis of Austin. They have a group pat on the back for each other and a contempt for those not from Austin. Maybe Texas football fans taught them that.

I guarantee, that from any reasonable neutral view, Norman is way way way friendlier to outsiders on game day than Lubbock us. And, we're not often down wind from the stock yards which whatever they're calling their stadium, often is. My first trip to Lubbock was with the Boomers in 1970. It was a downwind night. Nuff said.

Good God. This is as a bad of any type of ranking I've ever read.
Lubbock @ #1 & Austin @ #10 ?
I'd say this guy has a bit of hate thing going on toward the Horns.

1. I did like Norman.
2. I rather like Austin. Good barbeque in the area. I've always enjoyed it.
3. Lubbock is pretty good for steak and ribs. Kind of laid back with few of the bad attitudes of Texans.
4. There is good steak at the stockyards. Some good German food near downtown. Sleepy for a big town, and it is a town instead of a city..
5. OK---throw Ames, Stillwater, Lawrence, Manhattan into a hopper. Some nice features about each. But,each seems to have an aura of a future ghost town.
9. Morgantown has some beautiful scenery which they had to mess up by putting a town there. It wasn't worth cutting down the trees.
10. I still think Koresh built a compound to keep the people of Waco out. I would.

You couldn't be more wrong about Lawrence. It's a beautiful little city, and growing like crazy with an unemployment rate of about 2%.

One's impression of a town is dependent on what happens (or doesn't happen) to him during the visit. For example, as a young guy of 18 or so I happened to be walking down a street in Ft. Worth and this big ole guy coming in the opposite direction (wearing a cowboy hat and boots) yells at me as we pass, "You son of a *****!" right out of the blue. Wonder what he would have said if I'd been wearing my tutu?

Guarantee you good folks would never have to worry about taking your kids to a game in Austin. Trust me, Lubbock on the other hand for that reason is disgraceful.

There were a couple of times that I went alone. I had tickets for the crew, but they had "better" things to do. So I pulled my Casita camper to Caprock Canyons State Park, NE of Lubbock. The place is gorgeous. I didn't even go to the game those two times. I stayed at the park and hiked the canyon up to the old CB&Q railroad tunnel. I bet you didn't know there was a railroad tunnel in the Texas Panhandle, did you? It's abandoned now, but open to hikers. Those were very memorable weekends, just being alone. I lied and told the family I went to the games those two times so that I wouldn't get my butt kicked for hiking the back country alone.

This is one of those deals where most places are not as nice some think and other places are not as bad as some say….. Many people have a preexisting stereo-type about a place and look hard for reasons to reinforce those thoughts, good or bad.

Tech’s campus is architecturally far more attractive than UT. Most everybody that sings the praises of Austin talks about its entertainment and drinking amenities and I suppose those are a net asset to their community but the more mature I have grown the less I find those types of amenity’s (beyond the basics) very important.
