Maybe, but independence isn't totally the issue. They played two decent teams and lost including to one of the other teams on the bubble. In season games have to matter. Where they might end up having a problem is if teams stop scheduling them. What benefit is there to playing Notre Dame if you're in the Big Ten or SEC? Really none.

USC has a legit gripe… why should they play a non-conference game every other year the Saturday after Thanksgiving against them? Especially if they may be playing in the BigTen Championship the week after!
