NU is no stranger to long losing streaks under Collins

Let it be noted that Kenpom tracks what he refers to as Tier A and Tier B games, where Tier A represents a top 50 opponent adjusting for the location of the game, and Tier B is the same for a top 100 opponent. The last 10 games have all been Tier A, which is the most in a row for any year in the Kenpom era. Sunday's game is Tier B...let's get the win!

I appreciate all the data analytics, but man people on this board sure go through a lot of mental gymnastics to justify all the losing (and the absurd losing streaks) the last few years.

At some point, you just have to win games. Whether it's against Tier A or at Allstate arena. So yes, let's just get the win. Collins is going to need PBJ it seems to turn this thing around. It's all about the future and proving to that class that we are not a lost cause.

Let's finish strong and maybe even steal a game in the BTT.

Not trying to restart a tired old debate. But in 13 seasons the previous coach never had a 10 game losing streak. Not one. Yet in just 7 seasons Collins has had 3. Hard to believe that is just bad luck.

In 13 years the previous coach (checking notes)....never had a tournament win.

Of course, and a very fair point. It’s interesting before Collins broke through there was a vocal contingent on the board who said they didn’t care about 18 or 20 win NIT seasons; all that mattered was getting to the dance.

Now that we have the ultimate feast or famine coach (either NCAA or last place with 10 game losing streaks) I wonder if they feel differently. Neither side is wrong. I long for the days of having hope and something to root for deep into the season, but always being heart broken gets real old.

With Collins you know pretty early on what kind of season it’s going to be (losing to Merrimack set the tone). How many of you have switched from one side to the other?

I would rather have a winning team that has a shot at the NIT rather than the team we have now with potential but a horrendous record

It's not mental gymnastics or justification to simply note the Big Ten is probably the strongest it has been in a long, long time.

A) I was one of the big mouths who has no problem saying the NIT is worthless.

Let me put it two more ways.

Does an NIT next year drastically change the perception for recruits? Are top 30s suddenly jumping on board? I don't think so.

Additionally, we have our four or five people who go ABSOLUTELY OUT OF THEIR WAY to piss on Collins out here. That's fine. Does an NIT move the meter for any of them?

The NIT is a rest stop on the destination.

B) Would I rather have a winning team this year vs. the one we have with potential? My problem with that question is it's based on a one-year evaluation of a third group of recruits. Of course, I'd rather have the winning team.

But this isn't about one year in one group of recruits, nor should it be at NU. Are there five coaches in the country who could change the course of this thing in one year?

You have to build the right type of group with the right pieces to continue building it. Give me five skinny 6-8 players who show the same strategy every night, can't shoot from outside and don't rebound, and there's not much hope for year four.

Want to tell me there's five guys on this team who don't know what to do on offense? That's a legit argument, but you better acknowledge the long stretches when the offense has looked good this year also.

In the meantime, while we're waiting ... hoping ... praying for this group to "mature," I don't disagree with anyone who says they need to actually win a reasonable number of games before they show the potential to win consistently. They haven't done that this year.
