It’s tough. I’m an alum. I was part of the athletic population. I carried a goalpost to the lake into the water.

We have so many successful alum. A smart athletic marketing department could get past the smart / athletic disconnect. Maybe hire someone from the GSW marketing department.

We should have brainiacs that examine advanced metrics in all sports - the ultimate sports nerds. We should have zillions of NIL inducements. We should make this a point of pride - like where we rank in college rankings, where engineering, media, business, law, theater rank. We could be elite - if we wanted it

The school can only take so many. We already compete globally on various scholastic fronts. Adding a Duke, Bama, Clemson rep athletically would only allow the admin to rape undergrads on higher tuitions. And we could do that. Am I the only idiot that sees that path?

ok, rant over, time to watch my Sox throw their talent away and hate sports management more…

I took the goalposts to the lake that day! Lots of fun! What game and year was that? 81 or 82, I think 🤔! Nobody really gives a **** about hoops basketball 🏀 and football! Kids are way to smart! Why disfigure yourself at 19 when you can live a vibrant life till you are 75?

Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf book saved my wretched soul back in 81 when I stepped back from an All American 🇺🇸 talent type to pursue the riches of the Northwestern campus! A decision to step into the Magic Theatre by Herman Haller/ Wrassler to embrace the feminine psyche part of my brain 🧠 for the next 40 years!
Now, the beast/ monster Wrassler is soon set to unveil himself as a top 150 world 🌎 tennis 🎾 player for over 60! Just need to stay healthy! I had a local college kid on the ropes this weekend but wasn’t able to put him out of his misery due to slight heat exhaustion! This is my time! Return to Dominance says Gary Barnett and Wrassler!

I remember the day and time I surrendered to humanity and saved my soul! I had just wrestled Notre Dame as a true frosh in the starting lineup! Tied the mofo! That year I beat out the returning starter, Nick Price! We had to wrestle Oklahoma in a practice soon thereafter! I finally took a step back and said enough to enough! I still wrestled up to my senior year but was never the same! Too much misery on the mat and too much fun 🤩 on the dance 💃 floor and lakefront! A lesson for us all! Live to fight another day!

I sense there are more way more alum who take pride on not taking pride in sports than there are those who see sports as a chance to add on to the prestige of the university.

Most alums join the bandwagon when things get good and disavow our athletic programs when they struggle.

I just root root root for the home team. Fitz Yes, Collins No. Play the right way. Winning is secondary.

Sure, but it only takes a few successful ones. And I think NU sports a high percentage of successful alum.

Duke's academic reputation has not suffered because they have won NCAA basketball championships. NU and Duke are usually tied for the 8th or 9th spot in the US News college rankings. Sorry, but that dog won't hunt.

Here's an excellent quote from Draymond Green about a key quality in a great coach:

“He's a guy that knows what he doesn't know,” Draymond Green said after series-clinching Game 6 in Boston. “That's one of the best traits you can possess in this world, is being smart enough to know what you don't know. And Steve is absolutely incredible at that. He leans on [his assistants] for their strengths. That's huge. And his confidence in knowing we'll figure this out and we'll go make some adjustments and we're going to put you in the best position that we can to be successful, and just never being rattled.”

Allowing for some obvious differences in circumstances, we can hopefully find a coach secure and smart enough to know what he doesn't know and bring in the right assistants. It will likely take some time but NU basketball can turn around.

How about....."a guy where everyone else knows what he doesn't know" ??
