Here's some telling numbers now between Duke's Coach K and UNC's Deano Smith.

K 5 > 2
K 12 > 11
K 90 > 65
K 14 > 13
K 1070 > 879
K 61 > 58
K 3 > 1

Can you tell me what each number means?

K has basically passed Dean in every number Smith had on the books. An amazing accomplishment considering where he started.

You need to put an * beside all these because you forgot to add that the referees helped him get all this.

The numbers for Dean & K are staggering. Amazing that two schools just few miles apart had these coaches.

Another thing to factor in, there is a lot more parity now than there was when he first started at UNC. Racking up wins in the ACC today is one hell of a lot tougher than it used to be. Look at the number of perennial powers today , not to mention new teams that seem to appear every year at tourney time. What K has done in the modern era looks even more impressive.

I thought you were going to go with because Dean cheated.
Hahahaha Dean knew nothing about those ding dang classes. How can a coach be expected to know where every student is at a given moment and what classes they're taking.

My dad who used to write for the WS Journal in the mid 80s always told me stories about how the media and others always made fun of every little thing Dean did. However in his personal experience with Dean he said he was a great guy and pretty funny in his own way. Not that they were best friends or anything, but I just think it's interesting how K gets a lot of flack now because he's the best, and years ago it was Dean in that role. I guess we can all be haters...

K stole everything from them. No wonder they hate him without merit and go out of their way to fabricate delusional stories of how evil he is.

I can kinda understand their demonization of K. Heck , some of it can be attributed to just being a natural part of the rivalry. What's crazy is their deification of Dean. He was a good coach and won a lotta games. Period. To hear them tell it , he damn-near invented the game AND he was a saint too. They comfort themselves with this , "K has passed Dean's numbers but he'll never be the person Dean was yada yada yada." THAT is insanity bordering on the kinda juvenile reverence a kid might have for Santa Clause. Afflicts adults too. If your older unx fans are similar to mine , they speak about Smith in hushed tones. "Dean did this" or "Dean woulda never done that" etc. Now we know the truth. He was a ball coach. Period. They should let it go at that.

Those are some of my favorite equations!

Perhaps my favorite though is this one (a slightly different set of variables):

K 5 > 4
=
K > Dean+Roy

On the haters toward K, most of those are younger. CBB has ramped up and exploded on the landscape of America with brackets and the NCAA tourney as Duke has ascended so they took on the "Evil Empire" moniker - they are "devils" and they have guys people didn't like.

But, those of us who watched NCAAB in the 60's, 70's, and 80's realize that, in the ACC, UNC and Dean were the "evil empire" winners in the 80's and K and Duke were the upstart underdogs trying to de-throne them.

Yes and no IMO. Yes, there is a lot of parity today, and I believe more parity now than ever. No, racking up ACC wins is not tougher today than it was when players like Sampson, Jordan, Worthy, etc. were roaming the league as juniors and seniors. Those were the golden years of the league.

The game is so different now. The level of play is much lower IMO because most NBA caliber players never see their junior and senior years in college basketball. The players today are athletic, but they lack skills, basketball IQ, and competitiveness when compared to the players of yesterday.

You nailed it.

Back then college basketball was a lot like college football. Kids stayed around and developed physically and mentally. Now you have physically and mentally (maturity) underdeveloped boys going into the NBA. The talent is so watered down because those guys make the jump not being as good as they could have been had they stayed around for 2 or 3 years in college. It hurts both college basketball and the NBA. The NBA game is foreign to me to what is used to be. I can hardly watch it anymore.

Sorry got off the subject of K dominating the college basketball landscape :)

I've actually come to learn, on message boards anyway, that it's often the older UNC fans who are more out of touch. And I think that's because they held Dean in such high regard but now see him being passed by K in every single category. One look at THR and you'll notice it's the fans 40 and up who act like the children. To be honest, I feel most of their younger fans, again on message boards, just dislike Duke but are almost forced to at least admire what the man has done. Those older UNC fans really do view K as the devil, wuite literally.

I think the idea about wins being tougher now has more to do with more teams having even talent. Back in the 80s/90s and especially before you rarely saw ACC parity year in and year out. Yeah upperclassmen are tougher in a lot of ways, and more fun to watch very often, but some schools still had better talent than others whether they were upperclassmen or not.
As for the NBA thing it is very different now, but I wouldn't say in a bad way. The talent in the NBA is as high now as it's been maybe ever.

I agree. The difference today, IMO, is that a lot of that talent develops/matures more in the NBA than it does in college simply because kids are leaving sooner. Not in every case, obviously, but a lot of the time.
