Excited as everyone of course about potential and expected commits of Duval and Knox. Of course nothing is certain....

However assuming we get both (even if Frank doesnt return), theres really SIX guys who could start...
Grayson, Marques, Wendell, Gary, Trevon and Kevin.....

Quite honestly, I think ALL these guys have the mindset of starting next year. Who's most likely the odd man out? I dont think Grayson expects to come off bench his SENIOR year, I dont believe Bolden RETURNED w/idea of coming off bench, and we have 4 LIKELY OADs IMO none of whom would be likely to come off bench anywhere.....Again JMO, as we look ahead to the all important CHEMISTRY issue.

Personally I really am pulling for Javin to get a serious shot too (tremendous athlete), and think Vrank and possibly Jack White could help as well....

Thx,

OFC

I think the odd man out will be Trent.
I think Starting line up will be this next year(assuming Frank is gone)

1. Duval
2. Allen
3. Knox
4. Carter
5. Bolden

Depends on who plays better, Trent or Bolden. We know how Coach K loves his small lineups.

Gary Trent will come off the bench, imo.

He will be a good sixth man and much needed defense and offense coming off the bench.
Carter, Bolden, Allen and Duval are starters imo but if K sticks to his word and evolves the bench it's not gonna matter because lineup situations certain players off the bench could end up with more time then starters during certain games

Coach K makes the big bucks and he will have his hands full with all this talent, especially if Duval and Knox come. At least 6 guys that could start then throw in Delaurier, Vrankovic, White from last season. It will be an interesting season, and if they gel together, it could be a very good team.

My five most games (I'm assuming no Knox):
Duval
Grayson
Jackson
Javin
Carter

Other games or if Bolden has improved his awareness and stamina, this could easily be our lead group:
Duval
Grayson
Jackson
Carter
Bolden

A bench of Trent, Javin, White, McConnell, Vrank, Goldwire and Robinson is pretty damn good. I'm not sure I'd want to risk player discontent if we landed Duval AND Knox while retaining Frank. We'll be impressive if we just get Duval. We just need Duval. Duval.

He mentioned needing a deeper bench after the USC loss. Certainly I think its at his disposal this year...

Nice post Denver! I would be concerned about "discontent" as well w/Duval, Knox and Frank....I'd rather have Frank than Knox personally.... OFC

I think Frank is about to blow up if he stays. He took over that one game just before the post season last year. His ability to attack and then sit back and drain 3s is special. He can play D when he wants as well.

I don't ever see him as a real point guard, but he'd be a nice pairing with a taller playmaker like a James Harden, Paul George or a Al Horford. Just look at Isaiah Thomas right now. He doesn't distribute a ton, but he really makes that offense go with his relentless attacking. Frank has that DNA.

We really won't know until the first game, IMO. People assume Carter is a lock to start, but what if he struggles his first few weeks? A lot could happen. At this point, I think the only locks to start are Duval (if he comes) and Allen. The rest will be determined based on who earns it.

I think it's:
Duval
Frank
Grayson
Javin or Bolden
Carter
6th man Trent
7th man Knox
(with the loser of Javin/Bolden getting very few minutes)

Pisg all due respect I cant see Knox adjusting to coming off bench. However probable moot point, considering long odds Frank returns....JMO

OFC
Me neither because if Knox comes to Duke, it's to be one and done, so he wouldn't be happy coming off the bench and honestly I don't know how Trent will feel coming off the bench but someone is going to have to come off the bench, and I see Trent the most likely candidate to do that.

I am not intending to being negative here in any way. I am only making an observation. It seems to me a lot of posters are sure Bolden is going to start this year. I am not sure where the confidence is coming from after he played so little this past year. Believe me, I would love to see it. One of the greatest things about college basketball is watching players develop. I think it may be optimistic for him start and to have a breakout year, but I sure would love to see it. Prove me wrong big fella.

The thing that will help Knox out with playing time (whether he starts or not) is his versatility. He seems like he can play anywhere from 2-4.

Whereas a guy like Bolden is locked in to only 1 spot. He can play 5 and only 5 (I believe he takes major steps forward this year tho.)
Carter can play either 4-5.
Javin can only play 4. Those who pencil him in as a SF don't understand basketball and should never design a lineup again.

Hopefully we don't get Knox because honestly he's not needed. I don't think we need him even if frank leaves. This new kid might be a pretty good backup pg. Knox coming just takes away from Javin. vrank can be the back up center. The point is to stay clear from small ball. Knox is not the guy to play the four. Coach K will try to force it and mess everything up like this past year. I still say the best game we played start to finish was the Georgia Tech game. We played a traditional lineup that game. The second half of the Miami game was definitely the best defense we played all year. That was with a traditional lineup. You have to have a tough rugged tweener to pull off that small ball game. Grayson should start. That's the only definite imo. No way anyone knows where Javin will be good at. Its premature to say he's a 4 when he hasn't played much and no one knows if and how much he's improving over summer. Grayson is the only player returning that we know how good he is or should be

PG- who can run the show. Passing, tight handle and can score. Lock- Duval (need him to commit). Depth- Grayson & Jordan

Wings- players that can be versatile in defending but who can score at all three levels. Player pool- Grayson, Trent, Frank (if he comes back), Knox (needs to commit) & Alex

Forward- player that is more of a combo type forward comfortable inside and out. Needs to score but has to be able to defend big wings and bigs. Player pool- Knox, Carter, Javin & Jack.

Center-true post player capable of doing the dirty work in the paint on both ends. Player pool- Bolden, Carter, Vrank & Bamba (had to mention it)

6th & 7th players- need to have almost starter minutes.

The line up has many options.

Let me guess you know basketball huh? I'm the same dude that said after a few months into the season we would not go far in the tourney with small ball. Didn't even get out the second weekend. Just pathetic. And it's Coach K fault.

If these recruits would stop treating their announcements like Steve Jobs unveiling the new iPhone, we could make some real predictions here. They're only coming for one year anyhow so just announce already and move on

Bolden is not coming back to Duke to have a repeat of this season past. Food for thought, if he even thought he was going to. He would have transferred and just sat out a year. It's not confidence it's more of a how long will he stay in the starting lineup.
