A bourbon that I tried recently was J Mattingly Black ice. It was a phenomenal bourbon and smooth with a hint of bite in the beginning

Well, the OG Bourbon was Knight Aymar who died around 953 AD, but the first Lord of Bourbon seems to be his son Aymon. This was the first incarnation of the House of Bourbon, with the two subsequent incarnations resulting from the male lines of the main branch becoming extinct.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Bourbon

Numerous subsequent cadet branches were generated over the years. The main line of Bourbons is of course most famous for producing numerous French kings (as well as some Spanish ones). Albeit, it should be acknowledged that the House of Bourbon's parent house was of course the House of Capet, stemming from Hugh Capet, the first king of France. A lesser-known branch, one might say a more "specialty" line of Bourbons ruled in the medieval Kingdom of Navarre, which today corresponds roughly to the Basque Country of both Spain and France. Anyway, OP, that's where I'd recommend looking if you're interested in rarer Bourbons. Oh, you might also check out some of the Archdukes of Luxembourg.

YWIA.

Last one I finished was the Heaven Hill BIB but they no longer make it. I also finished Pikesville Rye since then. I'll come back when I drink more again in the fall and winter.

I needed this thread a couple of weeks ago. I found a bottle of this Van Pappy something or other. It was 23 years old, seems kind of old but whatever. So the first drink I mixed with Dr. Pepper, second with diet coke, the rest of the bottle with mountain dew. Didn't really taste right. If you all have had this stuff, what do you usually mix with it? Thanks

I have been buying on average one bottle a week for the past 6 months. I am up to 72 different bottles now. Walked into an establishment a day after the big snow this winter and lucked into Blantons for $58 and Eagle Rare for $27. Was delivered the day before but didnt have time to get it on the floor. Only let me buy 1 each, which I get. I despise the places that sell these for $195 and $125 a piece. I will never go back into those places that sell them.

I cannot drink bourbon in the summer so I am ready for fall and winter. When sipping on a drink by myself, typically go with Buffalo Trace or Woodford and/or Double Oak. When we have company over, I open my bar up to most of everything. Pikeville Rye is good and Longbranch isnt bad. I hate that its from TN, but Bib and Tucker still is the smoothest I can find. Relatively cheap I think for the quality. Angels Envy Rye is a great bourbon as a desert. Hints of caramel. I bought a Bardstown awhile back but haven't opened it. Not sure what it will be like.

I always mix it with some 5 hr energy drink. It really enhances the flavor

Picked up my favorite go to today. Four Roses single barrel. There’s a lot of bourbon out there a lot more expensive that’s not as good as that.
A bourbon that is good and easy on the palate is basil Hayden. I know e town has. 1.75 L for the price of a 750ml

Was in Cincinnati today and grabbed a bottle of Weller special reserve and henry McKenna. Surprisingly, didn’t like the henry McKenna at all.

I would have tried but it wasnt even on the floor. The guy working the store asked if I wanted either of them and I said ofcourse. He then said only one per bottle. He then walked back to the back and brought it to me. Maybe he liked me...

I think Henry McKenna is a very overrated bourbon. The ten year stuff was ok back when it was $20 a bottle. Not worth today's prices.

I like the McKenna. Maybe you don’t like bourbon with that mash bill? I tend to like the higher rye mash bills.

Possible. It had a weird cigarette/peat moss taste to me. I’ll give it another try as I was surprised I didn’t like it. I generally like a higher rye mash bill.

McKenna is a Single Barrel bourbon, IIRC, so it’s a guess as to what each will be.

Not to say you should or shouldn’t like it, but it wasn’t considered too highly until a few competitions rated some extremely well and in one competition they won.

However, again, those are single barrels so I doubt they put a “weak” barrel in for that.

Looking forward to trying your bourbon sometime soon.

2 tablespoon simple syrup(or honey)
2 dashes regular bitters(yellow top)
2 dashes orange bitters(orange top)
2 cherries
1 orange peel
1/2 ounce bourbon to mix it all up

Then add ice and finish filling the glass with bourbon.

Substituting maple syrup for simple syrup is also a viable option if you want a bit of a different flavor.

On another note, what are folks' opinions about Flatboat as a run-of-the-mill bourbon, to use as something comparable to Makers Mark, for instance?
