damn -- I think I also had another odd sunburn episode on the platte river

I sat in the front of a canoe and didn't move much
so I got two PERFECT SUNBURNED 1/2 OVALS on my inner calfs -- when I put my legs together......it made a circle......of seeing pain

I also saw our entire squadron get kicked out of a golf tournament........THAT was instructional -- hell, we reported to the Space Wing in Colorado -- F'ing OFFUTT man

damn -- some other memories are coming back too -- a REALLY young flirty girl that wanted me to come to her house out on 144th St --- and pierced (VERY MUCH) black headed girl who worked in our NCO club -- first "action" with the tongue ring.........couldn't coelenterate on the task at hand -- no like

such an innocuous town

skirted SO CLOSE to disaster so many times

I think I was the polar opposite. [laughing] About the only excitement I had was a couple of bowling leagues I was on (one on base and one off) and I also played on our squadron's basketball and softball teams. I guess working and hanging out with mostly married people kept me a little reserved. I didn't know many single people and wasn't very good at meeting new people (pretty shy back then) so I didn't really get to enjoy my military experience as much as I would have liked to.

My biggest regret was getting out after my 4 years. Mostly to go back home and be able to hangout with my high school friends. I should have went to school while I was in and stayed for my 20 years. I could have retired 6 years ago and got out with a college degree.

I also regret not going overseas. When I enlisted I preferred to not do it and ended up getting my wish and ended up staying state side the whole time. Might not ever make it overseas now. I went from Lackland in San Antonio to Sheppard in Wichita Falls and up to (boring) Loring in Maine before ending up at Offutt. There was a saying back then that once you get Offutt you don't get off it. That ended up true for me.

Here's a couple photos from back then.

The Red Roof Inn

View of the Blue Angels performing from the top of the hill.

One of my planes taking off.

The hangar where I worked..

the streets are arranged in a near perfect grid --- lettered streets all run E/W and #'s streets all run N/S or something like that
You can mention an address and quickly get an idea of where it is!
+1. And extend out all the way to Bellevue and beyond.

So, last Thursday, after arriving at Eppley Airfield and picking up my rental car, I got lost while looking for Farnum St and a place to buy some craft beer. I end up on Ave L around 72nd St. While driving toward 24th St. (US 75), there's some crazy *** dude standing out in the middle of the Ave L eastbound right lane blocking traffic and holding his hands together in a triangle. Reminded me of Chinese dude trying to block tanks at Tienanmen Square. He often switched lanes while holding everybody up. I finally got around him.

At any rate, later told my aunt about the incident. She laughed and said there's a nursing home by 60th St near where she worked years ago. She thinks old boy escaped from there, as she encountered many such incidents back in the day.

Thanks for posting those pic's, Airman!
Nice memories (and by "nice" I mean I was totally out of control and stupid - but lived to tell about it)

Austin - is it still considered the bad part of Omaha when you go down to like the 30th range of streets and Lake or thereabouts?

They had the "South Family Bloods" there wearing SAnFrancisco hats and what not

I think it was like the farm team for a real gang though ----

I almost ran over a guy in Germany on B40 as you come into Kaiserslautern -- dude looked like Rick Wright from Pink Floyd - circa 1970....which is to say he looked a little like Charles Manson

He was walking briskly - and wild eyed but with both hands down at slight angles away from his precious little German self -- and his hands facing out

I think that's the universal sign for "run my *** over - I look like Charles Manson and no longer wanna live"

I believe so. Kinda rough there at times, I've heard.

Two takeaways from my trip that just ended: Clean and green. Omaha, Bellevue and everywhere I traveled in Iowa appeared super clean. Very little trash on the roadways compared to TX, KY, TN and FL. Grass in the area is so beautifully green all over. Both aspects really impressed the heck out of me. Yeah, winters are brutal up there, I know. Heh, my cousin's daughter, Genny, says I should become a spokesman for Omaha tourism.

Heh, I spent 4 years at Baumholder just down the Autobahn.
