I admire him as a human being. And I think in the right place (like USC), and with a better defensive coordinator, he could be a successful head coach. But, I'll leave it at that for now.
I totally agree, because his coaches plus this talent adds up to nothing and he's too old for a long term rebuild. Hiring a Social Security-eligible coach only makes sense if the talent on hand can win quickly in his system. Southern Cal probably has the talent to win with him almost immediately. Obviously we don't.
Nebraska has the talent to beat BYU, Miami, Illinois, Wisconsin and Northwestern. We don't need the USC roster to pull that off...
The point was that Riley could probably win a lot of games at a place like USC because he's a West Coast guy, they've always run a WCO, has recruiting connections in SoCal, the high schools there run his type of offense, etc. But very few high schools within a 500-mile radius of Lincoln run the WCO.
So I have serious doubts that Riley will ever be able to consistently recruit the talent he needs to Lincoln to run his offense at a high level. Sure we're excited about POB, but what happens if/when he gets injured? Why hasn't Riley recruited any WRs yet? By the time Riley is able to build the depth he needs, he'll be pushing 70 years old.
For the QB issue, we are also in and may lead for Gebbia. Not a bad position to be in. For WR, we're still in on Key Jr and a couple of his buddies.
We were 1 throw today from winning. Either the Reilly drop (which was *not* a QB issue) or the TA pick six (which *was* a QB issue). Its arguable that "high level" doesn't have to be all that high. We're not talking Troy Aikman Michael Irvin level talent. We're talking Brandon Reilly or TA + a microsecond more concentration level of talent.
