I had not thought about the young Beamer vs the legacy that the older Beamer built.
EDIT: If this game were being played in Blacksburg, that would have a lot more significance!

I would give anything for a comfortable win. Doesn't have to be a blowout, but I'm not up for a white knuckle affair in Game One.

I'd like it to be apparent that we are, in fact, the better team from the outset of the game.

Of course, there's always the possibility we won't be the better team. But IF we are, I hope it's evident early on.

Leaning towards an ugly W.

A one-point win would work just fine.

Just survive and iron out any issues the following couple of games.

I really wish I could predict something like a 35 - 17 win, but I think it's much more likely that we kick our way to something like an ugly 26-24 type win.

Same old same old for us. We never hope or expect for greatness, lol. "Just escape and hope to magically improve"

How does fan hope or expectations tie into team performance?

We didn't play very well against ODU last season and found a way to "magically improve."

It's the first game of the season and we've now got yearly moving parts in this new era as we're not exactly stacked with highly-paid 5-stars.

This has always been the Fait Accompli of SEC teams who are in the lower half of the recruiting circuit.

Never said it did.
You implied.

That’s been the mantra of present day fans for a while now. They believe it’s a business model; do x and y to yield z.

I had one of cobie’s bots lecture me recently on gamecock fans that had ‘been around the block a few times.’ Please; I played against Alexander English in high school. I remember when Spurrier won his heisman lol.

It’s not ‘accepting’, it’s being mature and grounded enough to understand reality. I view our school athletics like I viewed my children when they were playing; play hard, celebrate the wins, mourn and hopefully grow from the losses, move on to the next. But if you pretend that the cards stacked against you won’t keep you from being the Green Bay Packers year in and year out, you seek that which you will not find.

Nothing in my post implied that fans hopes/expectations are tied to performance.

You are guilty of your own inferences.

Sure it did -- But I apologize if I interpreted your comments the wrong way.

Sometimes short form content requires additional context.

It's logical that fans would be cautiously optimistic about any upcoming season when we're consistently outrecruited/outfunded by the majority of our conference while also dealing with key players come and go on a yearly basis. (And yes, Va Tech is a school in that same boat.)

Predicting a first game performance against a P5 opponent on a neutral field when you have this noted variability is like reading tea leaves.

"Week 0" is always the most challenging for Bookmakers.

I remember when people used to argue that fans impacted the program by posting negatively or positively.

Lurker - If that was actually the case, your posts would have us dead last in the SEC as you're the most Fickle & Foolish Frog in existence.

Below is an example that took me less than 30 seconds to unearth.

Rivals was littered with your takes of this nature.

Setting The Scene:

+ Most fans weren't expecting anything going into last season.
+ Lurker & The Bots were clammoring for Beamer's head the entire offseason while singing the praises of Liberty's Chadwell.
+ We get by ODU and then unexpectedly thrash UK on their homefield. The BOTs perked up abit.
+ Followed it up with a heartbreaking loss/robbery to then #16 LSU. The BOTs hammered missed opportunities caused by Beamer & Staff.
+ We then lose soundly to Ole Miss primarily due to the fact Sellers was cleary banged up the entire game and the offense stalled.
+ Lurker & The BOTs then proceed to do their thing. 👇

"We hired on the cheap. If we are honest with ourselves, we would all admit that our university is not serious about football." (Stock BOT)

"I think the one we let slip away is at Liberty right now." (Lurker BOT)

"I would wager a lot of money that Chadwell will be coaching in a power conference long after Beamer is an analyst somewhere." (Lurker BOT)

"A neighbor friend of mine has a different TV service than I do. His service was not yet on due to the storm. I invited him over to watch the game. The guy is VERY football smart. During the game, he asked me a telling question: "What do you think of Beamer?". He knows what most of us know."

"Wait, "all his experience coaching"? You mean Beamer, the position coach?" (Lurker BOT)

------------------

I'm sure there were more of Botman's BOTs in that thread who haven't been identified as such yet.

Anyhow, to close the story -- we then proceed to lose to BAMA on their homefield in a 2pt heartbreaker and then rip off 6 straight awith 4 of the 6 against ranked opponents -- concluding with a win at Clemson and a legit shot at the Playoffs.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Chadwell ends up with less wiins at Liberty in Conference USA on the season than Beamer does in the SEC. :)

Thank you for listening to my TED Talk.

DEAD tell on a poster is when they say someone is 'VERY football smart.'

My favorite was the poster who said he got his info from Madden. And to be sure he was right, he "called some friends" who agreed with him.

First games are tough. Not enough film to really know what the other team is doing. Most blow out games are due to superior talent. We've rarely had that. Therefore our hope is to make more plays than the other team and also hope we don't coach our way out of a win.

My guess is South Carolina will have to OUTSCORE them, with all the "New Defensive line". Guessing 35-24... If Faison plays could be a little more Ball Control, so 28-21.

I've found that outscoring the opponent is the key to most victories in football.

Golf is another matter depending on how you look at it.
Unfortunately there are coaches who seem to think that you can stop trying to score once you are ahead.

COD was taking the OVER and doesn't believe our defense will be the key to victory in this game.

If you need any additional assistance, please let us know.

I've traditionally gone the "reverse psychology" route in picking the winner in games that make me nervous. So here it goes:
USC 17 VA. Tech 24

If I'm right, On3 can ban me for the remainder of the season ;-)

I am a huge fan of reverse psychology and reverse jinxes.

I don't know... truly have no idea how we'll do. I expect a win, that's all.

I do think this game will tell us a lot about where we are.
