I actually think LSU defense will be just as good as it was under Miles and the offense will be better. I think it was an OK hire given that they obviously struck out on the Big 2.
LSU would have won both the Auburn and Wisconsin games with a better offense and I believe this hire will provide that.
Now beating Bama, not sure that is going to happen until Saban leaves...

Great hire for kentucky.

He might keep them good for another year or two. But then he'll rub his ole miss magic all over them.

I don't get firing Miles to hire Orgeron...I assume Bama fans are smiling at that decision.

I don't think Orgeron's resume quite fits the bill to be LSU head man personally.

Think about what the fans of their biggest rival are doing right now. The Ole Miss fans are rolling out laughing in the Grown.

Jerry DiNardo Deaux Point O.
Think he deserves a shot with the way LSU finished...if he will use ALL the weapons LSU has offensively he will do fine...sure looked good yesterday and the Ala game was a "slobberknocker" as Claiborne use to say...Think most of the LSU fans were in his corner

I think he'll do fine there ... but real gamble to say he's an upgrade from Les Miles (who was pretty amazing).

Basically betting he's going to hit a home run with offensive coordinator hire.

That's one of the downsides of firing a coach mid-season. They had an out when they couldn't get in from the one against Florida, but I guess Coach O did enough to pacify the fans and will save the University some money. I thought bringing Miles back was a huge mistake and now they are likely stuck in nine or ten win territory again . They must of struck out with Herman.

Herman losing to Memphis yesterday might of made the decision easier. Much like Les Miles, Houston lost a few they was not supposed to .

I'd love to have that problem.

He's probably made a call to his ole buddy Lane Kiffin. But you have to think Kiffin is going to get another shot this year - Houston, maybe?

May turn out to be a good hire, at least that's what most of the LSU fans I know are saying. Apparently, Orgeron had some issues with alcohol during his last HC job which he now has cleaned up. Time will tell.

There is some Lane Kiffin to LSU buzz already on the net. We shall see.

The biggest thing for me is why panic so early? You have Coach O in your back pocket as your back-up plan and it's his dream job. He would have waited another week or so.

He should've had the USC job.
I agree w this. he's not the coach he was at OM; has learned along the way. this was by far the best option for lsu in this year of lots of heavy programs looking for new HC.

I know most if not all the LSU players really like playing for Coach O, and there's a lot to be said for that. However, they had to have whiffed on Herman for this to have happened.

I pointed out the other day that the LSU AD is a Dukie who knows nothing about SEC football. Just proved my point, a terrible hire. I imagine Sumlin and Malzahn are breathing a sigh of relief.

Zero idea why you make that move if you're Lane Kiffin.
Might not make the move but in good negotiating position. Per reports:

Lane Kiffin makes $1.4 million this year, but his contract expires after the season.

Bad hire imo. I am assuming they wiffed on Herman and Jimbo.
Very interesting! He has been head coach or important co-ordinator now at Ole Miss, Tennessee, USC and LSU. He will probably end up eventually on Bama's staff and either Ohio State or Michigan. Has anyone else ever coached at so many Blue Bloods of College football?

Go Big Blue!

I agree. Guessing Texas started gunning hard for Hermann. Maybe Petrino wasn't interested/ they weren't interested in him. You think they could do better there. Looks like maybe they just want to wait out a better candidate for a couple years. Maybe Chip Kelley?

Outside of Hermann and Fisher there just isn't big name coaches that would readily be available right now or likely in a few weeks. Maybe they think that changes down the Road and Coach O can just steady the ship.

1. I would have waited...you had this guy no matter what. Try for some bigger guns longer term as HC.
2. I think O will do solid there, but nothing spectactular. 0 percent shot of ever beating Bama as long as he is HC, but that would have been true for a lot of guys. I think Jimbo or Herman would have struck a little nervousness into Saban as an opponent but O? Saban is smirking today in private (as he never smiles in public it seems!).
3. This means Herman to Texas I assume. I hate Oklahoma so I hope he does well there and whips "big game" Bob every year.

I like the move.

Allows for some continuity/stability. Good for the team, and all recruits going forward that there isn't some long drawn out search where nobody knows where they stand.

Big Ed can go raid Texas while all their schools figure things out.

Also, LSU can probably save a little money with Ed.

All he has to do is get the offensive staff right. Targeting Lane Kiffin is aggressive and a good sign that Big Bayou Ed means business.

Kiffin may be in the running for some HC gigs though, so I don't know if he's going to move just to remain OC.

I'd look into Kendall Briles as well.

Also, Kingsbury may get bounced out of Lubbock and need a place to regroup. Same for Mark Helfrich. Rich Rod is sliding at Zona, they may give him another year, but if they don't he should get a phone call at least.

Other OCs I would call:

Joe Moorehead--Penn St
Tee Martin--USC
Major Applewhite--Houston
The Co OCs at USF, bulls are a top 10 offense putting up mad points
