OSU in talks to join the SEC, replace Vanderbilt?

I’ve got a buddy who lives near Columbus and is naturally an OSU fan. He said he’s heard that OSU is in “double secret” discussions with SEC leadership about joining their ranks. This would allow them to keep their annual rivalry game with Michigan and also create a true super conference with the addition of UT and OU.

Vanderbilt hasn’t been truly competitive for decades, so if they want to keep it as a nice round number (16 including UT and OK), well they would be the logical team “to be replaced”.

No word yet on if Clemson is interested in leaving the ACC for the SEC, but that’s where my imagination continued. In the NIL age, this is a logical outcome to be expected. If this is true and my buddy’s right, at least the B1G will be competitive again.

Maybe a three-way trade? OSU to the SEC, Vandy to the ACC, Virginia to the B1G?

Why would NIL be a factor? This directs money to individuals, not the schools.

Maybe because it could help recruiting by buying athletes that would otherwise go to an SEC school over OSU staying in the Big Ten?

Hypothetically: SEC wants to give Vandy a "soft landing", so they offer the ACC a contractual agreement not to poach schools from them plus a presence in the Nashville market.

Because this new conference - the SEC with Oklahoma, OSU, and Texas - would consolidate all of the largest, most passionate fanbases.

And therefore would print cash. Lots of it. NIL has allowed us to drop the facade that college football players get their fair share, or that it’s not an unpaid amateur league for the NFL. This new conference could basically determine its own national champion and keep most of the money to itself.

Did you see the news about the Alabama recruit that’s already got $1M in endorsements? Do you not agree that the best OSU quarterback recruits will want the same deals?

I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that the major school powers will start conspiring with each other (mostly out of fear of being left out) to create some sort of power alliance to keep themselves above the fray. If fellow conference mates get left out, they won’t care as long as their own butt is saved. I’m so very curious to see how this will all play out.

If the Big Ten replaces OSU with Virginia per @kaTNap ‘s idea, we’ll be fine. If it’s a Temple or Vanderbilt, then we’re probably in trouble.

I don’t see a UVA/OSU trade quite as favorably as you so. UVA doesn’t actually carry nearly the weight one would think from their bball success. 80% of the fans in this state are VT fans. VT fans are like OSU fans…loud and obnoxious. But they are everywhere! UVA is viewed as a elitist snobbish school, and Virginia (save the Fairfax area) doesn’t generally house those kinds of people.

The Big Ten will add schools not lose schools.

We have the biggest TV contract right now (soon 2nd after SEC if they grab Texas/OU).

The ACC contract is horrendous. It pays *less* than the Big 12 contract that Texas wants to leave, and those schools are locked in through 2036.

We should just blow up the ACC in 5-10 years and add schools like UNC/UVa/Va Tech/FSU/Clemson/etc. whoever Big Ten decides on...

The players are supposed to be student-athletes. I would have gladly paid football in exchange for tuition, books, room, board, and stipend. How much is that package worth per year?

Glades said it added up to about $50 an hour. Plus all the perks they get.

Anyway, there’s no going back now, as horrible as it is. It’ll be somewhat amusing to watch as fans who advocated for this suddenly realize what the consequences will be.

Less than their fair market value. The NIL will take care of that for the most part.

If I’m being honest? A bit more for our women’s basketball players than our lacrosse team - but not much in financial terms.

How many people watch or attend their games? Or more importantly spend money to support them?

Me, socialist ??? Are you kidding. I'm about as far from a socialist as you can get.

But this issue has nothing at all to do with socialism. It's about collegiate amateurism vs professionalism. As that line continues to get blurred, or even eliminated, as is currently trending, fans will ultimately regret the tremendous changes that will happen to the sport on the field.
