If I wanted to build a website, and have never done anything of the sort before, where should I start? What do I need to learn? Are some hosting places preferred over another? I need a crash course in this stuff, and have no idea where to even begin.

you are doing a site for the kids ballteam, the neighborhood association, etc, they are fine (and free). Thats all the experience I have with doing one.

how to do web programming or do you just need a decent website? I'm just guessing that since you use the term "Computer Savvy Folk" you aren't putting yourself in that group. If you want to learn to program let me know and I can give you some pointers. I run a web programming team so I live with this stuff everyday.

If as I suspect though you are just wanting to get a website built then there are a couple of ways to go. A lot of people use WordPress templates. These range anywhere from free to hundreds of dollars and you can usually find something that will meet your needs. The only problem is you are on your own with hosting if you need anything more than a blog. There are thousands of hosting sites with as many options but if I were looking for a relatively easy, commercially viable solution I would go with Square Space. They are a good hosting/template platform that has a very professional vibe to it. You can make the site as easy or as hard as you want. If you sign up for Square Space use the code "TWIT6" and you will get 30% off the first 3 months. Also, you can setup a site for free for two months without paying anything or giving any information. So it's easy to try.

There are other options, just give a little more info about what you are wanting to do and I can offer more help.

I don't put myself with the computer elite, especially when it comes to programming. My education is in finance, and I failed to take a single programming class. (Which I now believe to be a mistake) The website is something that me and some friends want to do for fun. We think people will enjoy reading the content we put out and hopefully get a laugh out of it. We want it to be functional and look professional. The content and logos and whatnot we can handle. But when it comes to building a website we have no clue. Maybe a template site will work in the short term (or maybe even the long term?) But, I would also like to learn how to build a site.

A blog such as what the previous poster described would be perfect for what you are proposing. When it comes down to it, most professional designers are going to use ready made solutions such as WordPress and some content management systems like Joomla or Drupal since it fits 90% of peoples needs out of the box. If you want something completely custom, it can be done but its going to take quite a bit of learning for anything more than just the simplest HTML site.
