Whether he’s worth that or not will depend on whether or not he gives any value as a pitcher going forward. If he remains an elite two way player, then he’s such a unicorn that you can justify it. If he has trouble regaining his form or gets injured again coming off his second Tommy John, then $70 million/year is insane for a DH even if he’s hitting well.

I will say, I have never seen movement on a baseball like this kid can make. I hope he's not spitting or using sandpaper. His fastball is literally unworldly.

My goodness, I didn't know he has already had two Tommy John's surgeries.

Then he's definitely not worth the risk!

For perspective, in the NFL Joe Burrow & Patrick Mahomes extensions that they signed in September are combined worth $725 million, only $25 million more than Shohei's entire deal. Ohtani won't pitch again until 2025. If he is still pitching during the back end of that contract, I doubt it is anywhere near the high-level he has done so far. Angels with Ohtani & Mike Trout on the shelf more often these days never had a winning season during Ohtani's career there. Read where a good portion of this contract is deferred so the Dodgers can keep spending money to add pieces to the roster as necessary.

1.19 billion U.S. dollars

In 2023, the Cincinnati Reds had an estimated value of 1.19 billion U.S. dollars. The Major League Baseball team is owned by Robert Castellini, who bought the franchise for 270 million U.S. dollars in 2006.May 16, 2023

The Dodgers are valued at $5.24 billion, according to Sportico, and as of two seasons ago, had the second-best MLB revenue stream at $605 million.18 mins ago

Just one bad injury and that can instantly become $700 million wasted. But, hey, if the Dodgers wanna take that risk….
I think it’s time for people to start boycotting sports so these pieces of garbage go broke that’s what I think. Everyday Americans are hurting bad and this is what it’s come to

That is an average of $433,000 per game for a 162 game schedule. Average ballgame lasts 2hrs. 30mins= $173,200 per hr. At an average of 5 at bats per game=$86,600 per at bat. Is anybody really worth that much? The Dodgers will receive a lot of money to show games in Japan. So, maybe???!!!!

Of all the major sports, baseball is the hardest to play. Come at me.
My son played first and pitched in high-school. Played center in football. He is 30 and still has headaches from hitting too hard on the football field.

**** the Dodgers. The rich get richer.

At least now that Ohtani has signed we will start seeing some real signing action. Reds going after Bieber, Glasnow, and Cease. Can't wait to see who we get.

By the time that California and Uncles Sam take their cut he might come out with a couple hundred million. Still, that is crazy money no matter what you do for a living.

Baseball wonders why no one watches their sport. Unless you’re a fan of a top 10 market team. Why even watch? St. Louis skirted that system for years but even that looks to be coming to an end. If you’re a small to medium market team you either get lucky with your farm system and hope you win a title in 2 years before the dodgers or yankees sign your players. Or you trade your farm pieces and hope you get good enough talent back to win with. Before they start demanding insane contracts.

I would say golf at the professional level is the hardest. The jump from a scratch golfer to carrying a your card is something else. Professional golfers are absurd.

I'd put baseball second though.
