Ok, so I know we don't have many OT threads here, but I've really gotten into the whole homebrewing thing over the last 6 months or so. How many others make their own beer and what is your favorite recipe?

I've made some damn fine beer lately (although I like the IPA's), but I find myself drinking much more beer than I should. :/

I haven't done it but had a friend who did.
Starting out his was pretty rough, but he refined his techniques and it got much better with time.

I remember him saying once his 'cost' per bottle that didn't explode was around 4.80 each! Wow... (factoring in the original start up cost)

Actually its pretty cheap. I think the absolute basic starter kit is like 150 or so. I saved bottles (non twist offs) and used those. My first batch was not good, but the 2nd and 3rd are out of this world good. I brew that stuff to my exact taste and I find myself preferring it to anything else. Plus...the hangovers are WAY less than commercial beer.

I wish I would have just started kegging it from the start though. More of a startup cost but damn, it's SO much easier and faster. I can make a batch ready to drink in 10 days start to finish if I want. Each batch now costs me like 30 bucks per 55 bottles and it's exactly what I want. I also have some friends that do it...so I make this, they make that, we share and it's all good. LOL

I never really cared for the taste of beer, just did it for the effect personally but as I'm getting older...those calories better freakin count for something.

I thought he was all about the green. He probably hates beer drinkers since it's legal and all. Now I don't give a damn about who wants to smoke some ganga personally, but to be militant about it doesn't work for me. I'd be a liar to say that I've never tried it. It does because that Cobra will bite your *** if you aren't careful or play the wrong tune. IPA's are pretty stout. My favorite of all time is actually a locally brewed IPA in OKC...It's called F5. If you get the chance give it a shot. I love it.

Wine is much easier, even from actual grapes. Most home winemakers make wines from kits. Throw some yeast in and wait.

The challenge with wine is that you can't make a good wine from **** grapes and there is nothing you can do to hide the flaws in bad wine. Beer is much much more flexible.

A web site said IPAs are generally 6 or 7% alcohol by volume, but I'm sure they were talking about the commercial brands.

The first batch was over 10% but it didnt taste good. The 2nd batch was about 7.5% and tasted great. The 3rd batch which i kegged and was ready in 10 days was 7% and tasted awesome. But even 7% is a lot better than commercial beer and the hangover is almost non existent!

Not to belabor the point but, indulge me...what causes the hangovers, the requisite preservatives? Or drinking massive quantities in a small window of time? I get that.

You want me to be honest? I assume yes...i dont know. I just dont have the hangover that i do with commercial beer. I dont want to assume anything...but i would like to think preservatives.

It could also be that my first generation yeast eats theough the wort more effectively leaving less sugar in the mix.

Well thanks, and won't impose anymore about your new found hobby. Sounds like something I could really get into though.

There are many factors that can contribute to hangover individually or together; dehydration (large quantities over long periods), mental withdrawal (high BAC), and insulin spiking from all of the sugar your body gets from the booze as well as the bacterial composition in the digestive system.

Ever know an alcoholic? They'll raid your house for chocolate if they can't get their hands on alcohol.
Alternatively, one recommendation for alcohol use reduction is to rid your diet of sugars to reduce alcohol cravings.

As to the hangovers, while I was stationed in Germany, the thinking was because American beers used preservatives and German beer by law can only contain 4 ingredients, the preservatives caused the hangovers...I was much younger and could drink copious amounts of alcohol then but I never had hangovers like I would with American beer. This was way before the micro brew market exploded.

Well, your Grandfather was one of the coolest people I knew. The press box at Catoosa needs to be named after him in his honor...........He was the first announcer that I ever heard say "Slobber Knocker" and that was in the 60's. I wish I would have asked him if he invented it.......

The man was my hero. I model my life after what I think he'd want to me to do (WWCD?) I'll never forget my time in the press box as his spotter. I did that in the later 70's and what a thrill. I never understood the draw to the LaMonica's but I think I understand it better now.

He was unique and the cause of a lot of my teen angst because he absolutely had no shame (or filter if you will) and embarrassed me quite often.
