Talk about lighting it up. Nice win by the Doug Collins Redbirds.

Will we even score 177 points in our first two games combined?

Maybe the teams were practicing safe social distancing on defense.

If you schedule non-D1’s, you should always make it the Greenville/Grinnell types so at least scoreboard watching is entertaining.

Third time this year Greenville gave up 170+ points:

Sanford beat them 174-99
UMKC won 138-97
Murray State won 173-95

and then ISU 177-108.

Amazing.

I only applied to two colleges coming out of high school - Ball State and Greenville. I had the opportunity to play basketball at Greenville. I went to Ball State. Regrets to this day.

Some of the other stats for Greenville’s games are even more amazing.

More than 200 shots in some games. Very few 3-point shots made, almost all points scored with 2’s. Greenville shooting less than 40% in each game but scoring around, or over, 100 points. Must be wild to watch.

Tell us more about Greenville. I'm actually interested and know nothing about the school.

I don’t think I have every seen a 86% FG percent for a team in a game.

There are several minutes of game action on YouTube vs Illinois State. It’s not basketball, at least when Greenville plays up. Illinois State had more uncontested lay ups than you can count. Lots of uncontested 3s too. I think Greenville’s average possession was around 5 seconds.

It’s been a minute since I visited their campus (summer of 88). It’s in Illinois. Private Methodist university that is Division III in sports. Small campus...I believe they have less than 1,000 students.

Greenville has an overall strong sports excellence environment. It’s always been, at least since the 1960s, a destination for student athletes in the high schools in a 50-100 plus mile radius. Football, baseball, basketball, track and field, soccer, both male and female, Greenville teams are high achievers in most years.

ISU is putrid this year. If they put up 177, you could get 5 bums off this board to score 50.

Greenville has been winning its conference with this style of play. Last year they beat Fontbonne University 200-146. I heard it referred to as setting a D-III record, and I wondered: does this mean that the NCAA record is more than 200?!

Interesting. Grinnell, which was also mentioned in this thread, is the more prestigious and famous school and they of course run an up-tempo style, but if you look up the "Grinnell System" on Wikipedia, their style seems opposite of Greenville's in many ways, where three pointers are greatly preferred over twos:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grinnell_System

The main tenets of the system are:
  1. The first possible shot is the best possible shot, where three-point field goal attempts are preferred over shorter shots.
  2. Shoot as many three-pointers as possible.
  3. In terms of defense, giving up an uncontested layup is better than a shot clock violation.
  4. Always double team the person with the ball.
  5. Every player but the shooter goes for the offensive rebound.
  6. Offensive rebounds should be sent back for another three-point attempt, not a shorter putback for two points.
I see that Grinnell beat Greenville head-to-head in 2016, 151-128, so maybe the Grinnell System is a tad more efficient?

Grinnell's system seems a lot more fun than Carmody ball. If we had to have a system, I would have much preferred that one.

We may have the Collins version of the Greenvillle system, if you can call it that!

My son played D-3 basketball (U of Dallas). One of the teams they played (don't recall who) just plain didn't play defense... at all; apparently as a deliberate strategy. I think my son set a single game scoring record of some kind with 43 pts. Dallas won the game, btw.

Edit after I looked it up: It was against Rhodes College (TN), 1/2/2017. Son had 45 points + 11 rebounds for a double-double. Dallas won 136-127.

Did they use the cherry picker scheme?
