OT: Is Gambling promotion getting out of hand? As a child it was labeled a vice.

Now every major sports show promotes it, sponsored by it, and makes picks against the spread. Home today and was just watching Espn and it seems many of there programs encourage betting.

I've never been one to gamble outside the occasional slot machine or a lottery ticket, but I know a few people whose lives its destroyed.

I got a kick out of one commercial that shows a broke Jamie Foxx calling all of his celebrity friends begging for money to use for gambling. I'm sure that premise was immediately followed by the "please gamble responsibly" tagline.

I’d much rather see betting commercials than those disgusting Lume commercials that are always on.

I watch MLB Network a lot and they have segments completely devoted to betting. Obviously MLB is at least part owner of the network. And I always think it seems hypocritical to promote this while banning Pete Rose from the game for doing the same thing. I understand it is more complex than that, but I wonder how MLB would handle a situation today if a player bets on a game. I think it would be harder to ban said player given MLBs relationship with the betting industry.

OT but close.

Washington -3.5 to -4 favorite over Sparty. Seems strange to me. Thoughts?

@Grant Green
I have Sparty as a 1 point favorite, but I'm laying off. UW was really bad last year under Jimmy Lake and our old buddy John Donovan. Bringing in DeBoer and Penix is a nice upgrade and I need to see some more to properly adjust my power rating.
There is an old sentiment that when a line looks funny, Vegas (and I mean oddsmakers and the sharp bettors that shape lines) know something that Joe Public does not. I don't always buy into this, but sometimes it will be a small factor in whether I make a bet or not.

When he’s betting on games involving his team, he should (and would) still get banned…that goes back to the integrity of the game and without it, a lot of that income from gambling dries up.

Ah, Mr. Potter… you’ve fallen victim to this day and age’s epidemic of Prepositional Phrase Abuse. You basically stated that Gambling promotion was once a child. ;)

Don’t feel bad, I see it done all the time anymore, even from professional journalists.

Pitt is now having a pregame day affair at the Rivers Casino next door to the rented Pitt home stadium. I would not be shocked if there is a gambling fix in acollege game soon.

It's not as easy to fix a game as people think, especially a football game. If it happens, it would likely occur at the lower levels (insert joke about Pitt being a lower level team).
Believe it or not, the best watchdog for game fixing are sportbooks. It is very much not in their interest.

Easily distinguishable and not hypocritical at all ... those involved in the outcome of the game can't bet on said games. Those only watching said games can bet on said games.

They're selling a product - competitive skills-based games. Two teams going against each other with the goal to win. Someone involved in the playing of the games betting on said games ruins the integrity of the product. Fans and others betting on the outcome of the games has nothing to do with the integrity of the game - in fact, it promotes interest in the product.

Why would it be difficult. Betting on sports isn't a problem for the integrity of the game, but people who are participating in those games betting on them is. It's a pretty clear distinction. This just happened with the Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley betting on games. He got suspended for the year.

I know it ruins lives, but I don't think it's the responsibility of the government to protect people from themselves. So I have no problem with it. Be responsible for yourself.

What did Det. Beckett say to Ric Castle in episode #1 of the 'Castle' series -- 'If you only knew' -- how all of the once illegal/now legal 'gaming' evolved in the good ole USA.

My research extends over 7 years, the Business Plan is many pages plus attachments, and the Financial Pro Forma shows middle 9 figures net/net in year 2. All of this based internationally in one domain name/website reaching up to 100 countries and over 30 million users per week, with Licensing, of course.

The USA could have greater stats if international play were allowed. Credit maneuvers for approvals and taxes on incorporation hamper any deal to be made. At present, playing powerball and megamillions from off-shore, is a possibility, if you know where to look, and there are 23 international sports books to tap into ..... if so inclined. Powerball (developed originally in Scotland) and I competed with differing software -- they won, and I transferred to a different platform for different results. I will not disclose without an NDA.

The only way to win, 'is to own the house.'

If you've been to a game recently you will see that PSU is promoting the PA lottery to the students. Get them started young! Not to mention it's a great money maker for the state and probably the worst bet you can possibly make.

Betting is only a problem if you lose.

I wish there was a weekly betting thread on here!!

Unfortunately, unless you are really dialed in, you are probably going to lose in the long run. Most should plan on losing some money and chalking it up to entertainment cost.

I started a running thread a few times in years past, but it didn't get a lot activity. Maybe time to start it up since again since legalization has expanded so much.

I’ll stick to finding guys on “hot streaks”, or dialing up the 900 numbers for the 50,000* Locks of the Year.

If I was giving advice to someone starting out today, I’d tell them to completely ignore trying to handicap and invest all energy into bonus whoring, promotions, free contests, and arbing. So many opportunities to start out and grow a bankroll in the current environment with all of these new books searching for customers.

Completely agree. My gambling partner and I have made a killing on promotions the past couple years. We probably only break even on our normal bets, but the promotions have allowed us to net a 5 figure profit the last couple years. I will note that they seem to be dwindling now. For instance, we used to get a promotion before the NFL season to bet $1000 on a team to win the Super Bowl, and then you'd get $100 free bets for every win that team had during the regular season. That's gold. But they stopped and now just offer $50 bet for SB winner and $5 for every win (yay...). FanDuel also had "Dinger Tuesdays" where you would bet $25 on someone to hit a HR, and whether that won or lost, you got $5 in free bets for every HR hit in that game. That was also pure profit, but they stopped that promotion a couple weeks ago. So I'm thinking that as the market gets more saturated, the promos will get worse.

Just tried to start one where I'll track people (as long as they follow the rules on responding with their results and posting where they found the odds). See how it goes.

All of them hitting like 70%.

Ugh, we get one option (DK) in Oregon and no college sports at all.

I knew a guy who had to borrow against his pension to pay his gambling debts. I remember him telling me that his wife and daughter left him. After a month or two he finally he got some help and to his credit, he stopped gambling. He was able to reconcile with his wife and save his marriage. The issue was the loan he took from his pension. The payback schedule forced him to extend his retirement date an additional 3 years. He died 11 months before being able to retire (heart attack).
