Vanity searched his name on twitter and it’s a rabbit hole. Pitino’s really do redefine “win at all costs”.

Pitino suspended 3 of his players 2 years ago for tweeting sex tapes. At that time he said:

“Obviously, culture and doing what’s right is extremely important to myself, our staff and our players. We’re going to do things the right way. Tonight wasn’t about wins and losses, it was about making sure our guys understand that this thing is bigger than just basketball. And we’re going to do what we believe is right. Today was unfortunately not as much about wins and losses but about the culture of our program. That’s something we work at every single day. And it’s extremely important to what we’re all about.”

Look like he lost another battle in his "war". Minny football has also had issues, leading to Claeys being fired for supporting his players boycotting after a sexual abuse allegation. And of course the AD himself was fired for sexual harassment. What is it with that school?

Seems to me there were a few criminals playing for Tubby back in the day, and didn't they get put on probably around the turn of the century? Must be something in the snow.

You can go back to the early 70's when Luke Witte got the snot beat out of him by Gopher players and fans on the verge of losing to OSU in Minneapolis. Ugly incident.

"It was bush," answered Taylor. "I've never seen anything like it. But what do you expect from a bush outfit?"

Specifically, Taylor was referring to young Bill Musselman, Minnesota's new coach, and the basketball program he brought with him from—of all places—Ohio. At Ashland College (SI, Dec. 15, 1969), Musselman built a reputation for showmanship, stingy defense and winning records. It was a reputation that was not always admired by a professor of philosophy who followed his teams there, Dr. Wayne W. Witte, father of Luke. Asked to comment on the brawl, the elder Witte said, "I'm not surprised. Musselman's intent seems to be to win at any cost. His players are brutalized and animalized to achieve that goal."

Musselman inherited a sagging program at Minnesota this season. The Gophers had not won a Big Ten title outright since 1919 (they shared one in 1937) and student interest was low. He was the fifth Minnesota coach in five years. Nevertheless, when the selection committee asked him how long it would take to turn Minnesota into a winner, Musselman said, "We'll win right off. I don't believe in rebuilding years."

He does believe in big, strong teams. Soon after he arrived in Minneapolis, Musselman picked up two junior college transfers—Ron Behagen (6'9") and Bob Nix (6'3"). Together with another JC transfer, Clyde Turner (6'8") and Jim Brewer (6'8"), Corky Taylor (6'9") and Keith Young (6'5"), already at Minnesota, they instantly comprised the most intimidating team in the conference. All except Nix were blacks who had learned the game on city playgrounds. The only question was how they would get along with Musselman, known always as a strict disciplinarian. "Discipline is the most important thing in life," says Musselman.

Then it happened. With the Buckeyes ahead 50-44, Witte was driving in for what promised to be an easy layup. Instead, Minnesota's Turner cut in front of Witte and clobbered him. Almost instantaneously Taylor got Witte with a sweeping overhand right hook on the ear. The crowd cheered, then booed when it was Turner who was called for a flagrant foul and ejected from the game. As Witte rolled over and slowly got up on all fours, Taylor walked up and extended his right hand in what seemed to be a gentlemanly gesture. But when Witte was almost to his feet, Taylor abruptly pulled him forward and drove his right knee into Witte's groin. The big center crashed back to the floor. Then the arena erupted in a swirl of flying fists. Later Taylor claimed, through Musselman, that Witte triggered the incident by spitting at him. But an inspection of slow-motion films does not reveal the spitting.

Another Minny coach talking about discipline but his team behaving completely opposite.

Fitzphile, you forgot about Dave Winfield. Very active in the brawl as I recall. Switched sports and became a baseball Hall of Famer! All is good!

One of the ugliest incidents ever on a basketball court. Musselman was a total POS. Unreal Winfield wasn't suspended too.

Oh, and was stated during the game today that Lynch will still be able to practice while appealing his suspension. Considering the track record of the Gophers Athletic Dept through the years, you would think they would tell him to do without basketball for a while, even if it was a he said/she said. JMO.

How the hell can he practice with the university's BB team if he's suspended from the university?

Willy, you and I are understanding it the same. While appealing, he can practice with the team (unreal as that sounds)!!! If appeal is denied, THEN AND ONLY THEN he's gone and can't be on campus. Meanwhile, I'm sure that makes coeds and their parents feel real safe.

Insane. Pitino should suspend him pending resolution of the appeal.

Why wouldn't he? And likely the suspension from the University is also on hold until the University rules. Sorry but he has rights also including due process. Until he is convicted of something or UMN actually rules, his rights need to be protected also. He has not been convicted of anything yet. Not being allowed to play in a game is a different matter as the coach puts together the lineup and if he plays and charges are upheld, they would likely have to forfeit the games he played in.

Much as I feel the idiot should be banned for life, convicted at colleges doesn’t mean Due Process was followed, or even allowed.
Agree. Title IX isn't about due process. But it is the way Universities discipline students. You accept the scholarship you play by their rules.

OK, he was suspended from the university but not from the BB team. Just how is that possible. A coach can choose to play you or not and can choose to let you on the practice floor or not as well. He can sit you if you came late to practice or didn't run a play that was called, thus a guy who has three woman accusing him of sexual assault and had at least another accusation at his previous school needs to sit during games and practices until the investigations end, period.

Dakich commented about Pitino and the AD's cryptic comments during IU win at Minny. Basically said "he should be gone immediately since second offense. Wouldn't be playing for me anymore and the Distraction is now removed. BUT, now the schools defer to due process, Title IX, investigations etc and remove the coach from the process." The UM is especially sensitive to this after last year's football investigation was such a hot issue.
