OT: Wasn't Dirk Koetter's name mentioned in one of our coaching searches?

Just now saw where he was named the Bucs head coach. Wasn't he interviewed for our opening maybe when Brooks retired? Not sure how a team goes from Lovie Smith to Koetter but surely there were better options out there? Even Coughlin. The Tampa area would've been a nice place to finish out a career and retire. Anyway just saw that he got the job and I remembered him being interested in our job at one time.

His name was mentioned pre-Stoops, don't know if it got to an actual interview. Former Arizona St coach is known for his offense.

BTW, Lovie Smith was an UK asst for about a month. Curry hired him then UT came in and got him.

I thought Smith spent an entire season under Curry?

Two questions: Did Koetter have UK ties prior? Seems he did. And never knew that about Smith. What was his title or position on our staff?

Not sure of DK's ties to UK.

Re Smith...haven't gone back to look it up but I think he may have been hired as a TE coach. I think he went to UT, stayed a year or 2 then went to the NFL and has been there ever since. Again, that's off the top of my head and I've slept since then!:)

from what i heard, lovie was fired because the Bucs were worried about Koetter being hired by another team as their head coach. so lovie didnt get fired because of performance, he was fired to hire Koetter

I live in St Pete and was kind of surprised by the move especially showing improvement from last year. The owners did like what Koetter did with the offense and especially the QB this year.It was also reported others were looking at him as a head coach.

Sounds like a good coach. Guess he's just not one of the "hot" names we hear about every time a job comes open. Hope it works out for them. Whoever made that call must have a lot of faith in him. Lovie has just impressed me for the teams he's had and what he's had to work with. NFL is a QB league and he did some good stuff in Chicago without very good QB play. Lovie will land on his feet somewhere. Just strange they ditch Smith for a pretty unproven guy.

So Lovie was fired because they liked their OC better than Lovie and afraid other teams would hire him as a head coach? Sounds a lot like other NFL teams that fire the head coach because they like another one better... LOL. Sorry, couldn't help myself. Not trying to be a smartass.

Would say I feel bad for Lovie, but just can't feel bad for someone that gets fired and walks away with Millions.

It was during Jokers demise, however Koetter was an Offensive Coordinator with the Falcons at the time and he never got to interview!

Lovie Smith spent 1 season at UK under Curry.
As far as Koetter, he won 26 games in 3 seasons at Boise State, that got him the Arizona State job, where even tho he had a winning record, he was let go.
He is known as a teriffic Offensive mind, and might have done well at UK, but we will never know !
