To give you an example, I’d say that IMO Rick Pitino was outstanding. (This Georgetown fan is begging you not to ask why.)

What about CFB. I sorta roll my eyes when I notice rankings which call Saban the best, well damn he had the best players.

Don Coryell comes to mind but he was NFL.

Wlat de Gawd Harris. Best record at the Jokeland Sheraton!

Well nowadays Coordinators do a lot that. So not sure any current H/C would meet the standard

Tough to pin down one, so I will give a list

Bear Bryant
Joe Paterno (Lou Holtz once said he was the best game day head coach and as any ND fan will tell you - Lou is never wrong)
Steve Spurrier (at least on offense)
John MacKay

For your NFL guy, I think you overlooked Lombardi.

I’d put Paul Brown ahead of Lombardi.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Lombardi. Fordham is a family school, my Uncle Bill. Imagine how thrilled Bill was when Lombardi joined the Redskins.

Villanova is also a family school, imagine how my Uncle Tom felt when his alma mater beat Georgetown for the championship. Many more of my cousins and uncles and aunts went to Georgetown than to Villanova so Tom particularly enjoyed that, I bet.

Perhaps. I think you could put Halas in that same converaion then.

The reason I chose Lombardi is I am remeinded of an interview with John Madden - whilst a young coach, he went to a coaching clinic and sat in on a presentation on the Power Sweep that was given by Lombardi. Madden figured this would be not a big deal, since he felt he knew everyting about the Power Sweep. Lombardi got up to the chalk board and talked abotu the Power Sweep for 8 hours and Madden walked out of there realizing he knew nothing about the Power Sweep and that he should listen to the senior coaches.

No word if Madden got Continuing Education Credits.

Mike Leach - ran a very unique system but had a ton of success with it. Always liked the Pirate!!

Peak Gator, I'd take Spurrier.

He seemed to know what the other team was going to do and he made it look rather easy.

His trolling of TN makes him deserving of consideration alone.

Urban Meyer was as good as I ever saw. He knew the feel of a game so well.

I'll give you a name nobody is thinking about, Bill Walsh. Now you say wait Bill Walsh was a NFL coach, and he was, but before then he was a college coach at Stanford. He had enough success at Stanford with his West Coast Offense to be hired by the 49ers and from there he went on to win Super Bowls and change football everywhere.

Before Bill, offensive football was focused around running highlighting a great back like OJ Simpson, Billy Simms, Earl Campbell and all the great Penn State backs. Bill changed that with his pass sets up the run philosophy and short quick passes to control the ball and move it down the field. The success the 49ers had made everyone pay attention, copy them to some degree and football has never been the same.

So that's my vote, Bill Walsh.

I always thought an underrated coach was Lavell Edwards at BYU. He had to get a lot out scheme since he didn't have the horses many other teams had. But dang his teams could score. The years of Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, Ty and Coy Detmer those teams could put up points. Not much for defense but they could hang 40+ on most teams.

FWIW: Saban was (is) one of the best X and O guys in recent times. As a defensive coordinator he probably was the best at both developing talent and scheming a defense. Maybe the most detail oriented DC in the game.

yea Steve Superior was great just ask him. Steve was at Duke and back then not a lot of colleges game planned for specific players, but Steve usually tried to find someone to pick on. Duke went into Maryland with all ACC QB Ben Bennett at he helm and decided to pick on MD DB #6 Lyndell Jones, for whatever reason. 4 Int's later the press was crowding around Lyndell lockers looking for quotes. Superior picked on the wrong guy.

a little forgotten name is Bobby Ross. What Bobby had over many coaches was, he coached on both sides of the ball, in the pros and college. Unlike Steve Superior he didnt like to play golf, his leisure time was spent in the film room breaking down plays.

By the early 70s, Joe earned a reputation as one of the best game planners in college football. He was especially tough with extended time to plan. A reason his record was excellent in bowl games. While later Sandusky took most of the credit for defensive game planning, it was Joe who by 1970 had transformed the traditional split 6 defense into a 46. Employing hulking defensive tackles aligned on the outside eye of the OG where they ate double teams....making ILBs All American. Putting his OLBs on the inside eye of the TE and shutting down a teams bread and butter off tackle. Later Buddy Ryan adapted Joe’s blueprint to the pro game and crafted perhaps the greatest NFL defense in history with the 85 Bears.

You did see the "Peak Gator" part of the post (you know, the first TWO words) right? That's MNC seasons. Has nothing to do with Duke.

But it’s still Steve . Spent too much time on the golf course to be considered among the greats just ask him

Jerry game plans were so complicated, by his own admission, that if Lance Mehl wasn’t in the game they couldn’t get lined up

Hate to say it but Harbaugh (Jim) is up there. Has had success everywhere including Stanford. Really dumb of him to link up with Stallions because he didn’t need it to be honest. Won three in a row against OSU too (3-5 overall) and three straight B1G Champjonships and a NC to go with a Super Bowl appearance.

Except he wasn’t winning at Michigan until he deployed Stallions. Virtually overnight had a defense.

He did it at Stanford and SF too. Didn’t need Stallions and I personally do not think it was a big deal given stealing signs is not illegal.
