OU ranked 65th in both Offensive Rushing & Run D

Which is more disturbing of that odd coincidence?
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/703

Our DumpsterFire D is pretty much beyond hope - our weakest link cornerback position needs double team help, which Mike can't/won't do (somewhat understandably due to the aforementioned #65th ranked rush D, but why is our rush D so bad and our pass rush so anemic? I'm not wasting my time there as Bob is not firing Mike - it is what it is).

But on offense, given a mobile QB, an AA-caliber TE, and MIXON and PERRINE...we should be in the top quartile running the ball, even behind the shoddiest of makeshift OLs.

In fact I see at least 4 top round draft picks on this O, in this order:
1. Mixon
2. O. Brown
3. Andrews
4. Perrine (if he regains last year's form)

Surely that kind of talent can be better utilized than the current 65th rush offense (and I mention Andrews because LBs should be peeling off the LOS and covering him, creating open lanes).

Since game 1 it is apparent Mixon is the best playmaker on this team and needs a lot more touches. If that means Perrine needs to start blocking for him, then do it Riley. Incredibly our ineffective red zone offense (against tOSU at least) does not even involve Mixon - he's typically on the sidelines in the redzone, as we telegraph Perrine is getting the ball (and stuffed).

What is the counter-argument for not making Mixon the feature back and building our entire O around him?

What is clear is that what Riley is calling is severely under-performing in regard to rushing the ball.

This is not a response to phaeded's question, but I'm not too concerned about our offensive rushing, considering we were behind right after half against UH and were behind all night vs tOSU, so Riley got away from running the ball as much as he liked. We had 177 yards rushing and 226 passing against tOSU, so I think we can run the ball pretty effectively if we don't have to play catch up.

But watching tOSU just grind the ball down the field and knowing there was nothing we could do to stop if was frustrating and was the key to the Buckeye win. I'm concerned about teams like TCU, Baylor, WVU and OSU who mix the run and pass well, but the power running game of texass scares the hell out of me. The thought of the horns just wearing down our D for four quarters is almost too much to bear.

Getting the run game D fixed is Priority One with this team, if I'm HC. The DBs, at least the younger players, are not playing well, but they can be more effective if our D can shut down the opponent's running game and keep them in 3rd and long situations. But it all comes down to who wins in the trenches. Right now our D line (and LBs) are not getting it done.

Riley called a Horrible game against Houston and Mike defense did what it wanted to do and contain Ward. He just didn't have an answer for the one side throwing the ball. I can't believe he didn't play a cover two, plus his obvious passing down defense sucked. I did agree with making Ward beat us with his arm, I just didn't think we should let him get comfortable in the pocket.

Riley needs to figure out the running game and MAKE Mayfield play the spread offense. This hero ball, playground play has got to go.

One thing that does concern me is the chronic underutilization of Mixon. Perine is a great back. But he isn't as explosive as Mixon is. That was VERY evident against Ohio State the other night. Against Ohio State's stout defense it was pretty obvious that Mixon should have been given more carries.

29 carries for 235 yards = 8.1 ypc.

Criminally stupid that Mixon has just 29 carries after 3 games. Yes I know he's catching the ball as well, but my gawd, get him as many touches as possible until he's no longer producing at a high level. That WR end around worked because Urban Meyer gets it - KEY ON MIXON - and his D just that as Dede faked it to Joe.

Again, we have a mobile QB and an AA-caliber TE to take LBs away from the LOS...65th rushing with two studs at RB???

The coaches are blowing it if they take either perine or mixon off the field for anything besides being tired or injured. Mixon or perine should never sit for the likes of Jarvis Baxter or mead et al. Mixon is a better receiver than either of those guy. Utilize him!
