How many times this season have Carr, Williams and Garrison had the ball with a few of the basket and refuse to go up strong to dunk or draw a foul, instead they'll pass or dribble out. Especially, Williams and Garrison, the later had two easy scores under the basket and refused to try to dunk it and missed two easy shots, this is typical, Williams is worse in this regard. I don't see this team doing anything special in March with the bigs we have at this point, any physical team that is balanced with solid guard play can beat the Cats on any given night.

The entire team is Charmin soft other than Butler, Oweh and Kerr. Robinson is so scared to go up under the basket he'll try to throw to the corner even though he's standing all alone in the lane.

I think Pope needs to start setting bench-triggers. Give up a wide open layup or dunk. Bench. Don't rebound with both hands. Bench. Defend with your hands down. Bench.

Williams is too soft for a player his size, Garrison looks like Bambi on ice, and Carr is inconsistent and not terribly athletic. It is what it is.

They can still play hard and give effort, defense and rebounding take zero talent so I’m not sure why ours bigs aren’t doing the basic fundamentals. Carr never boxes out and just go watch us try to rebound when they shot fts……..tells you alot about the mentality, cause im tall I’ll get the rebound…….maybe at Drexel and wake forest but not in big boy SEC. So tired of not seeing any fight or want to from them besides Garrsion.

We are going to be at the mercy of the refs the rest of the way. We are not a physical team and if the SEC refs are going to call the games as they have called UF and UGA its gonna be rough. We shot well against UF and won, poor against UGA and lost, that’s how it will be.

We can’t change who we are. When we try to return tit for tat we just commit obvious fouls.

We can work on rebounding. Its a fundamentals thing and its killing us. They are getting second chance points and we are getting fouls.

All valid points, we are certainly a finesse team this year. I'm still amazed how Pope and staff put together this roster in a short time frame. I think we are on the right track for the future.

Not going to lump Garrison in with Carr and Williams.
He had some rough patches but he fought back.
13/5/2/2 to Carr and Williams combined 8/10/0/0.

Speaking of which, where has @HerrosHeroes been lately? You know that guy believes there’s a chance until at least 0.1 left on the clock no matter how far we’re down.

He kinda outed himself as a troll in another post and hasn't been heard from since then. He will probably show back up under another user name.

I hope he (she??) is ok. Sometimes people who come off as trolls actually have other problems.

We need some bulk next season. Garrison and Moreno seem like great kids but are not physical players and adding Caleb Wilson won't help. Pope needs to add a big strong center and PF from the transfer portal
Doubtful if there's any center in the portal who would beat out Garrison.
BG is just a soph.
No 5 year players next portal class unless NCAA passes 5yr eligibility.

They wasn't great handling the ball. We should have put maximum pressure and physicality on them starting at the tip. I still say in this league as soon as you see a team start all that physical stuff then one player needs to go after that player and force the refs to start calling fouls on both ends to keep control. And if that is not going to even things up then they need to all foul themselves out so attention is brought on those refs. The refs have nobody to answer to.

Garrison could certainly stand to get stronger this summer, but he has some Magloire in him, IMO.
Garrison is a borderline Flagrant 2 waiting to happen. He was fortunate he didn’t get called for one last night.

In the NCAA, a player who commits a flagrant 2 foul is ejected from the game and is ineligible to play in the next game unless the league reviews the incident. A flagrant 2 foul is considered to be unsportsmanlike conduct that is extreme in nature, such as:

  • Swinging an elbow excessively and making contact above the shoulders
  • Excessive or severe contact during a dead ball
  • Fighting

The opposing team is also awarded two free throws and possession of the ball after a flagrant 2 foul.

Who was the player that took Carr down by his neck and then purposely put his foot on him when he took him down? Carr was furious over that but when they checked the replay they let the takedown and stomping on Carr go.

I don't think they're soft - seems like an easy thing to put out there

I think uncertainty or confusion or tentative play in response to disparate officiating can lead ppl to thinking a player is "soft"

I like our bigs quite a lot - especially for a roster that was hastily assembled as this one was

Maybe you're saying we need someone who fills the enforcer type role and doesn't necessarily score much - but fouls hard and gets in other players faces more?

Just trying to understand what we're saying here

Who would be good historical UK players to compare to for a hard post player?

Williams reminds me of Jamaal Magliore a little - doesn't seem soft to me

Carr is definitely more finesse though

Like some of our fans they are soft too including your post .

To stay neutral on the rest of it: Somto Cyril is a fricking giant of a man. Sure wish we’d gotten to see him suit up here.
But a horrible fit for CMP’s offense. That’s the thing. How many big physical big men will have the dexterity and ball skills to have our offense run through them ?

Was fixin to post just that. He has those little "innocent" bumps and pushes and stare downs that Magloire had. How many times this season have the refs had to go to the monitor for a play he was involved in? Seems like quite a bit. I think BG will be a good one for us in time. He's gotten better as the season has gone on.

I think I misread "soft" as saying the player isn't playing hard or with max - effort

And I think the OP probably means something different - physical toughness and imposing ones will against their opponent probably

Which means I probably un-did my previous post

Somto matched Amari for assists last night and had fewer turnovers in more minutes. Other factors involved but I think the horrible fit narrative is artificial here.

The way most coaches would want to use Somto because of his attributes, that’s what’s a horrible fit for what Pope would want to do. But that doesn’t mean Pope couldn’t use him differently. It doesn’t mean he couldn’t learn to be effective in zoom or that his attributes couldn’t also be useful there. Very worst case his rebounding gives us a nice margin of error when our main bigs need a breather.

What does being hard do for you when the other team slings you to the floor and you get the foul?

Magloire, Bennett, and Hurt would be "soft" under the same circumstances.

Been saying the same thing myself. You need3 centers and if 1 can play forward so be it but you need the bulk. Each position should have at least 1 capable backup.
