Pantomime .... please explain.

Why do great performers/entertainers pantomime? Is it fear of screw-ups? I would much rather hear a goof live than to just listen to a recording of something. The most moving pantomime is nothing better than listening to the radio.

I think it's because, at their essence, they just aren't that good and many studio tricks are used to make them sound good. If you heard them live without any help, you might not like what you hear. Like OP, I don't mind a wrong note, a forgotten lyric, whatever as much as I'd hate to go see a live performance and watch someone lip sync/dance/perform to a recorded track. What exactly am I paying for if the performance is a recording?

Yes. I was referring to today's performers. Autotune as well. The point being they are products of studio manipulation. Next question please.
