Curious why the plan was what it was vs VaTech as we went nearly 2:1 run/pass, particularly when the run game wasn't terribly effective. There just didn't seem to be much effort to push the ball down field and stretch the D. The one long ball I can remember was the deep TD to Harbor. I could very well be forgetting, but I don't think we even really tried anything else deep. Ultimately, it worked. Just expected to see us toss it around a bit more. Maybe coaches were confident in the D keep Tech in check and wanted to get the run game extra work.

I know Harbor had one bad drop early on, but he flashed some good plays out there. Got robbed of a TD as well (IMO).
Yeah he made up for the drop. Murph had an early drop too on that same early series but had a 20 yard reception later in the game.

Offensive line was shaky in protection right up the gut. Think we got a little gun shy with the pass after the safety.
We have ranked 120th+in sacks allowed in each of the past 2 years. We allowed 4 sacks last night. We are on track to achieve a trifecta of a 120th+ ranking in sacks allowed. Thankfully, we are not scheduled to block a lines of grandmas because that could be embarrassing.

The receivers are the most ignored component of a passing game; the ol and qb get the scrutiny but the aggressiveness and ‘want to’ of the receivers are equally and can be even more important in the grand scheme. I have always envied Clemson’s receiver discipline and effectiveness; VTs was actually pretty good too. Our receivers for whatever reason, and this has been characteristic for a good while now, just don’t have the aggression or inclination to sell out. Having said that, it definitely is encouraging seeing Harbor’s light coming on.

Not sure his light is gonna "come on" and stay on.
I thought Harbor had a nice game.

To me, he flashed some Alshon vibes. No, I am NOT saying he’s as good as Alshon. But a big bodied receiver who can high point the ball.

It disturbs me that we can't seem to just line up and run the football - the old-fashioned way. Maybe that aspect will develop, but the OL got very little push or leverage yesterday.

Well, it wasn’t for lack of trying. The ole A for effort.

I just wonder how much longer Teasley’s leash can be.

I guess I just didn’t get the strategy. It’s not like we just kept pounding the balll, and then burned them with a deep pass. We just kept pounding the ball for no gain. And we didn’t try any deep passes to loosen the defense up to get the run game going. As far as I know, we didn’t try any deep pass until the fourth quarter. But maybe all the running was the set up that one play. I don’t know.

It's pretty clear to me; We were keeping things vanilla to keep SC State off-balance next week.
Seriously, though, we have heard this basically after every disappointing opening game for as long as I can remember. To this game, I don't think we were necessarily keeping it vanilla, but we seemed to be intentionally NOT pushing the ball downfield in the passing game, which was odd considering we have a Heisman candidate at QB. Rather, we doggedly stuck with a running game that simply was not working. It seems maybe Beamer felt the D could keep VaTech in check so he wanted to use this game to really work on the run game, using the pass as necessary. With a Heisman candidate at QB, we were nearly 2:1 run/pass. Either that or they don't trust Sellers throwing the ball.
