Pelphrey with an emotional message which the LOD’s should take heed

Those were a totally different era of players who cared and left everything on the floor. John didn't have great talent but fought to the end. Today's players(at all bigtime schools) care about their paycheck.
Those are the types of players that get their **** pushed in by real talent!

A couple of things. They maximized their ability. They were very skilled. Also, they had Mashburn who was a very unique talent who bought in to what was happening. Without Masburn, it would not have worked. At the same time, those 4 guys showed Mash what was required for greatness. In some ways, it was nearly, (about a second) a perfect storm.

I've always felt like Reggie Hanson should have been with the unforgetables too. I guess the fact that he was one class ahead is why he wasn't. But he deserves similar props. Staying and having to play out of position as a Center for UK - where he got beat on like a rented mule - was admirable too.

Pelphrey and the UK players from that era gave everything they had for their coaches, for the basketball program and for one another. But that kind of dedication and commitment no longer exists at the Power 4 level, and it didn’t exist at UK once Calipari showed up. As much as I respect Pelphrey and his message, I’m not going to start pretending that it does.

They didn’t have Mashburn in Pitino’s first year.

I’m not sure what message the OP thinks they are sending here.

The LOD, (in whatever form one thinks it is), exists because of the expectations set by generations of players like those guys.

The people that grew up with Rupp, Hall, Sutton and then Pitino just expected that kind of hard nosed play.

And anyone that grew up playing basketball in Ky fully understood why those guys stayed. Certainly outsiders never understood.

Those guys epitomized what KY basketball is all about. The SI headline of “Kentucky Shame” hit them in their very soul.

Just as it did most of us. They were determined to change that and they did.

We, UK basketball fans, owe them eternal gratitude for what they did. They were the very essence of Ky basketball and they showed the world what that is!!🏀👍

No, and it was pretty rough.
It was but it was also spectacular. Even Cawood said that team would be lucky to win 5 games.

And no one would have complained about it.

But they went 14-14!! They beat LSU with Shaq and Roberts with Deron Feldhaus playing center!!

Undermanned in every game. We played no one with less talent. Two walk ons contributing. Skip McGaw was one of them. He got hurt. Had he been able to play the whole season we might have won 15 or 16 games?

Still, the greatest thing about that team was tearing that SI headline to shreds!!🏀👍

Good post.

And the OP must have missed the part about how our two most stories players ever - Jamal Mashburn and Dan Issel - have both been vocally critical of how this year's team has played.

Are they also in the LOD now?

Hope we can get John back in our program at some point. Would be a great administrator. So passionate.

Why do people use a series of letters and think we know what they mean? What the hell is a "LOD"? I've read all the posts and still have no idea what a LOD is. I'm assuming it's in the video, might be, might not be. I haven't had time to listen yet, but I plan to eventually. I think people who use mystery acronyms are.... well... kinda "TTIO".

You can not, literally cannot bleed bluer than John Pelphrey. The players on this team are NOT John Pelphreys

Not disagreeing with your main point here. But just as an aside and to guard against possible revisionist history, I would question whether a lot of those watching always “expected hard-nosed play” from Hall and Sutton guys.

Hall and Sutton expected it and pushed for it, but they often didn’t get it. UK had loads of talent – and much more relevantly, had guys whose maturity and development should have allowed that talent to actually blossom into great college players. But it didn’t always pan out that way and I often thought it was due to some guys who may have grown a bit too fat (figuratively) and comfortable.

Just my observation that the good old days weren’t always exactly as nostalgia would have it.

I struggle with UK not winning a championship for 14 years and thinking there’s a good chance it will be a bit longer now it seems. I guess it’s not a big deal, but expectations have been set because of the programs success. Also other blue bloods such as Duke, UNC and UConn are passing us by.
