Listening to Jeff Byers, aka Ironhead, is such a treat in a tournament. Reminds me of Christmas morning when my kids would be opening gifts and squealing in joy with their gifts. Ironhead is expressing excitement of a takedown and all of a sudden someone is getting back points on the adjacent mat. His voice rises and you feel as though you are right there and then the fall is called. Sheer delight.
When Cenzo pinned Martinez, Byers needed to chug a case of 5-Hr Energy to calm down.

I wouldn't have it any other way. The man is a legend. He says he's lucky to call PSU Wrestling, but we're the lucky ones.

Byers is what sports radio is all about. The best announcers on radio have to paint a picture for the listener. When you listen to a team announcer you expect a little bias towards that team. He might not describe the technique being used during a match like some announcers, such as Ironside from Iowa. However, his shear emotion and excitement makes the listener feel like you're at the match .

I always like when Jeff is at tournament and he sees a non-PSU guy do something special and we are not on that mat, he gets excited about it and let's us know. He also calls it as he sees it. If a Penn State wrestler gets out wrestled, he'll say it.

Lastly Jeff is there for the team. If Cael needs an announcer be it a banquet or golf outing Jeff is there. If Cael needed someone to direct traffic out of the Nittany Deck wouldn't be surprised if it were Jeff with his headset on.

Jeff in general is a servant leader. He calls my kid’s elementary school fun run fundraiser, is on the PA for State High Football, and just about anywhere he is asked. A good dude.

There probably arent many announcers who can describe specific techniques like Ironside. They just dont exist. Many of those guys are coaching. The rest probably arent willing or able to do radio.

I think a lot of people have been almost dismissive of Nate Desmond's weekend, and are also confusing Luke L's prowess at freestyle with where he's at in folkstyle. Yes, he's one of the best in the country at his weight. I need to see more before I'd pick him to win in March. Desmond gave him all he wanted. Yes, familiarity plays a part in it, but in no way was that a Cornell-esque not really trying effort by Luke. I wouldn't expect Luke to just turn a switch and major Desmond the next time they met.
While I'm at it, I think we have the two best 157 lbers in the country (PJ, Kasak), and add Sealy, if he wrestles like last weekend could get high on the podium. I personally think our best 157 lber is redshirting. I love all these guys, but I don't go for the coronations. We had a guy bolt to Oklahoma State maybe because he thought 184 was his birthright (seems to be a smart move, I don't think he could hande Rocco).
Anyone care to project who is more likely to move up to 133 first, between LL and Desmond?
