The process is in the nomination phase - candidates who can solicit 250 or more nominations will be placed on the election ballot in April.
Each year, Penn Staters can elect three alumni to serve on the Penn State Board of Trustees.

The elections consist of two phases - the nomination phase which runs from January 15th through February 25th, and the general election which will take place later in the spring. The process is in the nomination phase - candidates who solicit 250 or more nominations will be placed on the election ballot in April.

If you are an alumnus who has voted in previous elections, you should have received a nominating ballot in your e-mail on January 15th. If you are not familiar with the process, or have not voted in previous elections, or have not received your ballot, you need to request your nominating ballot from Penn State. You can find a link to request your ballot here: 2022 Alumni Trustee Nomination Ballot Request (office.com)

You do have to be an alumni to cast a ballot - but if you are not, you can make an impact by forwarding this message to any alumni among your family and friends. Since Penn State does not publicize the elections, they probably are not aware of the process of how to vote, or who to vote for.

Candidates who have announced their intentions to run:

The three incumbents - Barbara Doran, Bill Oldsey, and Ted Brown, have all announce that they have reached the required 250 nominations.

Three candidates are still soliciting nominations:

Barry Fenchak BARRY FENCHAK FOR PENN STATE TRUSTEE – Responsible governance. For a change. (barryfenchak4trustee.com)

Maribeth Roman Schmidt Maribeth Schmidt - Maribeth Roman Schmidt for Penn State University Trustee. Expect More. Nominate and Vote Today. (schmidt4psutrustee.com)

and

Laurie Stanell (no active website found, but Stanell was on the Board of Trustees from 2018-2021)

The slate of Penn State Forward, the advocacy group sponsored by The Boarding School, can now be found on their public website: Penn State Forward | Join Us (psuforward.org). I assume they are still soliciting nominations.

I used to always vote in the BOT elections until I realized the board is controlled by the B&I cabal. Board members who make waves get marginalized and if they don't learn their place, the Lubrano Rule will be unleashed. I liked the recommendation from a few years ago to reduce the number of BOT members to about 20. Of course the board was opposed since it would have removed the B&I cabal from power.

I believe you have "hit the nail on the head." What makes me mad is how the Business and Industry (B&I) board members are placed on the BOT. At one time B&I members where chosen in a fashion like the Ag members. Certain industry sectors through professional organizations like mining or steel production would nominate folks from these sectors to represent that sector. But as changes happen in industry these sectors were no longer that important to PA. So a change was made where the outgoing member nominated a replacement. This happened and I was alseep and did not know this was going on. I did not protest and this revolving door of members. Now this block of members with support from other non-elected members has a lock on voting.

Understand your displeasure, but it's not at all uncommon at a lot of schools for trustees to be selected in some way, shape or form by members of the current board.
