SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Penn State coach James Franklin believes college football needs a commissioner and he even has a candidate in mind: former Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“I think he’s the obvious choice, right?” Franklin said.

Franklin — who joked that Saban wouldn't be thrilled with his comment — made the suggestion on Sunday at Penn State's College Football Playoff quarterfinals media day ahead of the Fiesta Bowl. The sixth-seeded Nittany Lions are preparing for their game against No. 3 seed Boise State on Tuesday.

The veteran coach was responding to a question about Penn State's backup quarterback situation after Beau Pribula transferred to Missouri just weeks before the CFP began, leaving the Nittany Lions scrambling for options. Pribula's decision highlighted some of the frustrating aspects of a new college football world in the Name, Image and Likeness era and the transfer portal, forcing players to make tough decisions at inopportune times.

Franklin said that because there isn't a leader dedicated solely to college football, conference commissioners are left to handle the task themselves. That's led to bickering between the leagues because different conferences have different interests.

“I think one of the most important things that we can do is let’s get a commissioner of college football that is waking up every single morning and going to bed every single night, making decisions that’s in the best interest of college football,” Franklin said.

The 73-year-old Saban retired after last season as arguably the most successful college football coach of all time. He won seven national titles, including six at Alabama and one at LSU. He is now an analyst for ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

Who would this Commissioner work for? NCAA? CFP Foundation?
BWICAC, obviously.

But really I think it would be a new entity as I think B1G and SEC are going to go on their own with a few cherry picked teams from ACC and B12 (maybe).

I suspect that 95+% of interested readers have no idea what exactly a role like this could do. If you’re thinking “the right person would make CFB what I want to see” you’re at risk of being in that group.

We’re in new territory. Courts have drawn some boundaries that aren’t likely to be relaxed. And for the first time somebody is tapping into the consumer surplus related to personal “happiness and pride” around your team winning, rather than just the value of attending an event or viewing on metered media. It’s what I refer to as “fanboy NIL.” The question is would such a commish be largely aligned with the other parties that would like to get their hands on that same, newly tapped pie?

It seems to me that if the game is going to be saved (and I'm not saying that it can be) it's going to take credible people who love and understand the game to do it. people who can talk to fans, judges, and politicians and make a case for some sensible changes.

Wherher it's Saban or not can be debated but College Football needs a centralized management structure to oversee the sport

I know some lawyers who are going to collect about $500mm (maybe more) as their fee for the pending settlement who can probably find a guy - for a price.

Put in all the rules you want, they are only as good as the people agree to abide by them. Right Nick?

Nick’s only real complaints is that power swung in the players favor and against the coaches/programs. That’s why he left, he couldn’t control it any more. Also why he left the NFL as fast as he could, no advantage there to exploit. When he got to pay all the 5 stars who just couldn’t wait to sit on his bench and they couldn’t run down the road to the next highest bidder, he was just fine with it.
