Given how far PSU is over the 85 limit (around 95 with remaining eligibility, at last count, looking only at incoming HS recruits and no more portal additions) there certainly would have been a lot of unhappy conversations over the last few weeks.
I would expect most of the processing to involve guys with 5th/6th years of eligibility left (like Cephus)

In 2021 for Kent State he had 82 catches for 1200+ yards and 9 TDs.
Puzzling. PSU plays a higher level of competition than Kent, but one would think his production wouldn't fall off a cliff like it did or whatever ability issues he may have had would have been identified by the coaches (and they wouldn't pursue his transfer as a result).

He never appeared to learn the playbook. Ran wrong routes and blocked on passing plays where he was primary.
I do seem to remember one of the announcers in one of the earlier season games saying he was “taking some time to learn the playbook”.

Not enrolling in January certainly was a draw back to his on the field play. Plus from coaches comments, it doesn't seem like they were happy at all with his effort.
Franklin, interim co-offensive coordinator Ja’Juan Seider and receivers coach Marques Hagans all gave slightly different answers as to why Cephas didn’t play. Franklin said it’s an “open competition” every week and pointed to the return of injured receiver Harrison Wallace III as part of the reason why Cephas was bypassed on the depth chart. Hagans said it came down to “accountability of how guys practice and who gives us the best chance to win.” Seider said “if a kid ain’t on the field, he must not have done his end of the bargain.”

Freshman come in all of the time and learn the playbook it’s not that difficult.
Often the ones that play enroll in January. Big adjustment in complexity and speed coming up from the HS ranks. Just asking, but who do you have in mind that excelled as a freshman ?

DDS off the top of my head and there have been plenty over the years. If you want to go back decades Hershel Walker had a "pretty good" freshman year.

I understand you were responding to a post about freshman WRs contributing. But since the thread is about Cephas, it's worth noting he wasn't a freshman. Yes, the playbook was new to him but c'mon, this ain't rocket science. It's playing WR, something he had done at the FBS level for several years before coming to Penn State. He can only be described as a huge disappointment.

Just needed some time and effort.
