Higher Education management is showing signs of becoming a “short-term, high-turnover” industry.
The President’s Council at Penn State is a group of 21 Senior Leaders (various vice-presidents and the like).
Since 2022 (when Dr Bendapudi was named as President) every one of those positions has changed hands (except for the Director of the Applied Research Lab). Several have changed hands more than once, and several are currently filled by “interim” (non-permanent) appointees.
This is at least the second time that a key member of the council left just as critical developments were unfolding within their area of purview (Provost Schwartz, who had been chosen by Dr Bendapudi just months earlier - to replace Provost Nick Jones - left the provost position just as the new funding model was being rolled through)
The Provost position (essentially the CEO of the academic side of Penn State) still does not have a permanent person in the role. In fact, during most of Dr Bendapudi’s tenure PSU has NOT had a permanent Provost.
