Pinto Beans are the most tasty cheap food on the planet, imo. I love the damn things, especially with raw onions and cornbread (not sweet). Also good with salsa and corn chips.
My mom could sure cook some soup beans and cornbread. She baked it in a cast iron skillet......raw onions and a little relish !
Makes me long for the good ole days !

My grandpa used to make soup beats every sunday for dinner. It was a weird thing for my grandparents. He'd always have beans and cornbread, and my grandma would have a bag of popcorn and a diet coke. Every single sunday (except holidays).

Soup beans and cornbread and any combination of fried taters, pickled corn, sour kraut and wieners, onion and when we have some, canned beets. Home canned beets are delicious. You can actually buy the canned beets at the store, put them in jars with your mixture and in a few weeks they're ready to eat. Easier than raising them actually.

Your grandma sounds like a fine, smart lady.

Ditto on the beets. almost forgot. and the store bought pickled beets are about as good as homemade.
