frustrating loss because it seemed like the cats were the better team, but didn't execute as well vs. pitt who could just make plays. some of the shots that fell against Bradley didn't tonight

the good:
- spencer was good again
- best minutes for jones and boo

the bad:
- didn't try to get the ball to young
- it was like a 5 point game and the cats went down by 13-15. hard to crawl out of those holes

i thought the cats got better in these past 2 games. thats a good things. need to continue working on consistency.

Pitt fan here. Good luck this year. We are still figuring out what our young team is capable of but glad to get a win over a quality opponent.

By the way, your renovated arena looks sweet!

Agreed.

Need to get Gaines and Turner going on the offensive end.

We literally couldn't get some bounces our way, the refs were pretty bad (not only against us), and we didn't take advantage of Kopp and Beran who both had their shooting stroke early.

But overall encouraged by our play.

Easily the thing driving me most batty is how often baskets are scored against the Cats by a weak side pass to someone wiiiiiiiiide open. Since game one this has been a thing, but I also assume it's a product of a bunch of young guys who don't know how to rotate yet.

As for Turner and Gaines, please, please, please don't play them together.

Gaines I can live with. At least he brings something to the defensive side of the ball.

I'd love to say I'm surprised by Turner, but ... I hope he can figure it out.

On the good side, I was glad to see Buie step it up. I really like his game and its potential. If he could become more consistent with his 3-pt shot and curb those freshman mistakes, the Cats have something.

It's going to be a rough season, but this is not a disaster by a long shot. There's a lot to work with.

Nance had a few good fade away shots near rim in first half then went back to his non assertive self 2nd half

Nance looks like a UNC power forward. Do not root for Carolina but they do have top talent. Hope Nance keeps developing and makes it to the next level. He does not assert himself the way we think he can and eventually will. All the young players are flashing big skills at different moments just need to put it all together. Also good experience for them on a neutral ct

The offense is a mess. Wont’t be consistent on scoring attacking like this. Some days more shots than normal will fall and we will win. But this pass around the ball and hope something magically happen is not a recipe for offensive success. It’s nosy just us, it’s a trend in college basketball o don’t get. It does not seem like getting the ball closer to the basket is on anyone’s mind. Maybe I’m too old school but it seems to me the closer to the basket the ball is the better.

We are solid on man to man for the most part. In a zone, we continue to look like friends who got together for a game and are just standing around covering an area. 5 players on the opposite side of the one I’m covering? No problem, I’ll stay here and guard this empty area.

But we do have talent. Even if Young had a poor game we saw more from Bouie, Beran and Jones. Kopp and Nance need to believe they can score 20. Those two should be scoring 35 combined every night in the future.

At least this game felt we were not outrageously out coached. Or that our guys had no grit or energy. Felt more like an ugly game that was still fun to watch for seeing our young guys learn and develop.

How about the weak passes waiting to be intercepted and taken in for a layup?

What's up with Anthony' shoulder? He's still wearing that compression tape on it. Sure hope it isn't going to require surgery. I remember Crawford wearing the same stuff the season he shut it down and took the red shirt to get it repaired...........

One advantage of playing Pitt is that Capel and CC are such good friends. I am sure they will share the big things they learned from preparing the game plans against each other.

I love reading the postgame threads on Reddit, to get a feel for fan bases of other teams. If you read any Marquette thread on there, they seem to say the same things about their offense and coaching that Northwestern fans say about theirs.

i guess i never bought that because it seems that 1) the ball generally got into Pardon or Olah (and has been getting into young), 2) the cats very often seem to get WIDE OPEN shots - even without a great penetrating/play making guard

We watch all of the games, and NU does get quite a few good looks, they just need to more consistently knock them down.

I don’t know if Turner is hurt or not, but right now I would rather see Boo in there even though he can’t shoot. He gets in the paint and will get better as the season goes on. Turner has too much skill to float out there, has to be something ailing him.

Turner can't shoot and neither can Gaines and they don't have their hands wrapped.

Through his first three years of college Turner shot .333 from three.

I remember he started cold last year. I think DePaul was his breakout game.
