18:07 - Cross switch results in big-small mismatches. Oweh blocks shot on UNC big, the ricochet happens to land underneath directly to Wilson for putback. Fortuitous bounce for UNC

16:43 - Kam Williams walls up on Caleb Wilson drive which misses short rim. Moreno, on the backside has UNC’e Veesar literally draped over the back but no call. Imagine his left arm isn’t free (looks locked up to me) so he tries to grab the rebound with his right arm. Wilson reaches from behind to deflect the ball back to the top of the key to Jarin Stevenson. Chandler dives but does not have the angle. OReb UNC.

15:47 - Transition layup attempt by Bogavac has Wildcats in scramble mode. Kam has rebound position on Wilson but Wilson uses swim move to get the offensive rebound from opposite side of rim. Kam needed to be more physical on the box out. Bang bang type of play, awareness issue.

15:07 - Bogavac attempts driving layup, blocked cleanly by Aberdeen. The ball was deflected directly back to Bogavac for his own offensive rebound. He attempts a wild layup which leads to uncontested rebound for Aberdeen

One quarter of the way through the game. So far, there are two plays you could make an argument are related to effort. I don’t think either rebound was related to effort. One of them was over the back that wasn’t called which led to attempted one armed rebound attempt and the other was quickness of Wilson being too much for Kam in the open floor. Anyone is welcome to contest the notion on those and review for themselves on that.

8:48 - Wilson attempts a ridiculous 25 foot three point heave, which bounces very hard off the rim over all post players and lands directly in the lap of a UNC guard for an offensive rebound.

To me the defensive rebounds weren't the issue. We rebounded 28% of our misses. Which is slightly on the low side but nothing crazy.

It was them grabbing 20 offensive boards (47.8% of their misses) that was the big issue. It led to 11 additional shots. And they won by a mere 3 points.

Game changer.
Yep. And that’s exactly why I’m doing this exercise. Seeing if I can dig into what exactly happened. I’m not a coach, just a nerd, so I include timestamps so y’all can go to the oBallo replay and see if you have a different perspective on some of those boards.

From what you are saying, it sounds like a big reason for the rebound disparity was due to bad shots by UK and some fortuitous bounces for UNC. FYI, I am not dismissing lack of effort by UK, but it seems like bad decision making on UK's part was a big contributor.

Since he was brought up, I will say I have never liked Dick Vital. He has always been a Duke UNC slurper and never given UK the credit it deserves as a blue bloob program.

6:49 - Jelavic with an outstanding shot contest on a short corner middie by Wilson. Jelavic boxes out, ball bounces far left of Jelavic. Jelavic fully extends with both arms to rebound the ball, but Wilson explodes past him and rips the ball with a seriously impressive offensive rebound. The kid has elite offensive rebounding chops and a nose for the ball. Great effort by Jelavic who simply doesn’t have the quickness to turn 180 in time to grab that ball before Wilson.

Definitely a play to go re-watch for those who assume effort. When you rewatch this play, you’ll see Wilson is simply faster and better read of how the ball will come off the rim. These are very common traits for elite rebounders —- they have a knack for knowing where the ball is coming before their peers can adapt.

Did you mean to say the offensive rebounding wasn’t the issue?
