Does anyone know if the NCHSAA decided to expand the 1A and 4A playoffs back to 64 teams instead of the 48 teams they used last year? I agree that it’s absolutely the correct decision to push the playoffs back a week to accommodate for the hurricane, however it could create a problem. If they only have 48 teams for 1A and 4A, then the top teams will have a bye in round 1. That would put the top teams in the West going 3 weeks between the end of the regular season and their first playoff game (2nd rd). I thought I had heard they were returning to 64 teams, but don’t know for sure.

With 76 teams in 1A and 4A would prefer to see them go to 32 teams and four rounds.

48 qualifiers is 63% of the total teams playing football in the classification.
32 qualifiers would be 42%. Always thought more than half the teams qualifying for the playoffs is too many.

2A and 3A have 114 teams with 64 qualifying for the playoffs or 56% which is good fit.

That's going to make it difficult for the top western teams in 1A and 4A to stay sharp. Imagine a team like Mt.Airy playing a season finale on Nov.2, then not playing again until Nov.23!

Drop the playoffs to four rounds for 1A and 4A. No byes. I guarantee you the coaches would vote to stay at 48. Finish those classifications on the original schedule.

It’s all about the money and the more teams the more money for the state.I can remember in the old WNCHSAA for the most part only conference champions made the playoffs and a champion was crowned after about three rounds. I think they later added a few more teams by taking second place finishers in a rotation of different conferences. They hardly ever had the first round blowouts we have now.

The WNCHSAA had an eight round playoff for several years at the end. Champion and runnerup. At one time champions only participated which the NCHSAA followed, also.

The NCHSAA requested 1A and 4A go to four rounds last year and had done so with 1A schools in the past. The schools (ie coaches) were very much against this. I think for 1A they should definitely go to four rounds as so many players play a winter sport. I would rate roll out the basketball or mat if I am on a one or two win team. The schools are more adamant about the playoffs than the NCHSAA. It was the 1A schools that pushed for subdivided playoffs for the 2001 season and every classification screamed for it starting in 2002.

Why can't 1A/4A just go back to 64 teams instead of 48? I know the argument will be that those divisions only have 20% of the schools rather than 30% like 2A/3A, but having a bye (for all sports, not just football) is stupid.

They can not have 48 teams with only 4 rounds. You would have to drop to 32 teams.

1A has 75 teams. Why not go to 32 and four rounds? 64 is 86% of the schools making the playoffs.

The 32 team / four round is not new. The NCHSAA has requested 1A schools to look at that in the past.

Basketball and volleyball went back to 64 teams this year for 1A. To be honest I liked the 48 teams and would have 0 issues with the 32. I believe the playoffs should be earned with success.
