1. The defense was swarming - The way they worked over those Bradley screens was textbook. The help man picked up the ball while the weak side guy swung over to guard the lane. But the picked man didn't relax. He fought like crazy over the screen which allowed the help to quickly rotate back before they could get burned. That takes effort and focus, which the Cats did for 40 minutes. I have to say, that was probably the best defense I've seen NU play since Sanjay Lumpkin shut down Wake Forest a few years ago.

2. A point guard with composure and confidence - Boy have we missed one of those. While it helped that every goofy shot Spencer was throwing up went in, the bigger deal to me was the way he handled the ball with assertiveness. That Bradley guard was quick and he was in Pat's grill all game long, but it didn't really faze him. He brought the ball up just fine against full court man-to-man pressure and often times beat his man into the paint. There will be BIG teams with better interior defense for sure, but not many that will get into Pat's face like that Bradley guard did.

3. Kopp finding his role - While I hope Miller continues to develop, for now, he is a spot up shooter. If we don't have to ask him to do much more than that, then he can thrive in that role. He has a nice, quick release and can make those shots when his feet are set. If we now have PGs that can dribble penetrate to get the D off balance, then that leaves Miller open on the wings for 3s.

4. Beran is growing in confidence - It sure looked like he played with a little swagger last night. He reminds me of Falzon in that he can hit the 3 while on the move, but he seems to add a little more quickness and ball handling that Falzon (at least post-injury) lacked. He desperately needs to put on some muscle this off season, but last night was encouraging.

5. Young could teach a course - He put on a clinic in the paint last night. His footwork down low is really impressive. He was scoring over and around much more athletic defenders because he was patient and used his footwork to create scoring angles. While I wish he had the athleticism to take those feeds from Spencer and just throw them down without hesitating, he seems to know his limitations and figures out other ways to convert. Whether that translates into BIG play remains to be seen.

Fun game against a decent, experienced Bradley team. The question is can the guys play with that kind of effort every night? Looking forward to Wednesday against Pitt. That is a winnable game if we play tough again.

This is a great write-up. The cats played with an intensity that we haven't seen yet. I suspect that CC will have them similarly motivated to face his old buddy at Pitt. Let's hope the trend continues of the Cats getting up for big games.

Young always seemed to know where to be and as you say, his footwork is very good. Now if he can hit his free throws...

I think as the season goes on, we may see Young dunk more. Once they get into conference play, something tells me that he’ll figure out that going in aggressively to dunk may give him a chance to draw more fouls. When he gets rolling making free throws, that is huge. I think he has some perimeter offense as well, that we will probably see eventually this season. I like how this kid plays! Getting abused by Dererk every day in practice last year (probably) has served him well.

Agreed, he’s real nifty around the basket. I’d say he’s already surpassed Alex Olah both defensively and definitely with those crafty up and unders down low. He’ll definitely be able to score in b10 play if he keeps it up with the intensity. The two man play with him and Spencer was a thing of beauty.

And Spencer - man, this kid is tough. 4 games into is college career without having played competitively since high school - to come out and play a game like that, keep it up. Too bad we only get him 1 year.

I really like Beran. He's got the pedigree, he's got the size, he's got the mechanics, he seems to have a good handle, good feet, good head. 5 points on 3 shots and 5 boards off the bench doesn't seem like a huge deal, but good teams have a few guys who can chip that in consistently. And he's only going to get better with experience and strength.

Beran is getting better everyday and by the end of the year he might be quite a good player

Careful. It's a long season and First Years tend to wear down as Big 10 play grinds on them. Don't be surprised if he fades down the stretch, it's pretty common.

Nice analysis. It really was a fun game to watch. Team played hard and Spencer dominated the game on the offensive end. I don't know if he can do that in conference games but it transformed the offense. Kopp shot with confidence and didn't force anything as you mentioned. I think Beran is significantly more athletic than Falzon (even pre-injury). Falzon had a great release and could carry the team when he was hot, but he was alway pretty much one-dimensional, even his freshman year. Beran has better hops than I expected. He had a great block in an earlier game and his put back on his missed shot showed real athleticism for a guy his size. It remains to be seen if he can shoot like Falzon but his form looks great and he has been hitting them in a small sample size. Beran would greatly benefit from a good point guard like Falzon did his freshman year. Let's hope that Spencer and Buie can get him some open looks. I think Young will continue to drive me crazy while making some significant contributions. His hands and hops are not ideal but he works hard and his footwork is great when he gets good position.

Fun game to watch. Gives me hope for the future. Really impressed that they did not permit Bradley to have a second half run to ever make the game close.

The man to man defense was a marked improvement over the zone. We did a much better job of blocking out on the boards. Spencer is fun to watch.

Excellent win.

Regarding Spencer, I'm hoping he is only now starting to knock the rust off his basketball game after focusing on being the best damned lacrosse player in the nation. He's had a couple of forgettable games, but like you said, he's now only 4 games into his college career. Looking forward to more games like he had against Bradley.

Even now he is getting plenty of trips to the line

Look at how Young is doing. Look at Pardon's development over 4 years. How much better Olah got his last three.

At one position the coaches seem to be really good at developing players.

Probably some don't realize how good Young was in high school at Pa.'s Bethlehem Catholic, where he was first team all-state. He also played very well on his AAU team, which has sent many players to excellent D -1 programs. As far as his athleticism is concerned, he was also a member of his high school football, volleyball, lacrosse and golf teams!

He moves well. Runs the court well. Gets off the floor a little bit. I think he's more athletic than, say, Olah who I use for comparison because of size.

So far, not seeing a ton of stupid fouls.
