Had no idea that BYU billed UK for the $6 million buyout for Pope and haven’t see this discussed. I honestly had no clue that colleges did this. Is it a common practice?

Yes. It’s common. It’s why the argument that “coaches can leave why can’t players” is a weak argument. Coaches don’t coach at 3 different schools in 4 years. And 75%+ of the time, if they break their contract, it comes with the receiving school paying a buyout to break the losing schools contract.
So players should either have transfer rules such as the old “1 free transfer and 1 grad transfer” or a 2 transfers in 5 years rule….or we go to player contracts with buyouts

This is why the NIL is so screwed up. A recruit can receive massive amounts of money, with absolutely no repercussions for transferring or leaving for the pros after year one. If anyone ran an actual business like this, they would be bankrupt in 4 years. That's why there needs to be some sort of contract required. A type of we will pay your asking price, but we want some guarantee of a return on the investment. The NCAA was screwed up with all the underhanded payments, but IMO NIL has made it even worse than it was?

Then we paid him a top notch salary and we guaranteed 75% of it. All for someone that would've crawled here.

It’s common. Any coach that has a buyout if he leaves a university negotiates that the new school pay the buyout.

I think we all understand the buyout was apart of Pope's BYU contract, we all follow sports here.
It's the fact that we paid 6 million to another school and 5 million plus on top of that for a guy at Pope's level. This is just the latest example of Mitch's ineptitude. He paid 2.5 million to fire Joker, signed Cal to a lifetime contract, the mess we have with Stoops.

He is saying Calipari didn't have a buyout. Example being, if he took UCLA job, they would owe UK zero. Pope had a buyout at BYU.

It aint his money. He actually has done a great job here in all. If you take away personal feelings and look at his whole tenure, it is a net positive for sure. Hell of a lot better than several previous administrators. He has his share of gaffes though.
Cal did have a buyout though. That's why we couldn't fire him. It was like 40 mil over the course of 6 years or something insane.

Cal had no buyout for another University to pay in order for him to go to another (that) school.
In other words, Cal was an unrestricted free agent at all times. No consequence for another team to poach him.
On a side note...those were all his terms. Calipari doesn’t even have an agent.
It was a buyout that we would have to pay him if we fired him . There was no buyout for another school to pay us if they hired him .
Big deal! I would rather pay 16 million for Pope's first two years than pay Cal 18 million for the same two years.

Second, why are we acting like Mitch did something wrong by doing what nearly every AD at every school in the country has done when hiring a coach away from another institution? There's plenty to criticize Mitch over without engaging in faux outrage over nothing. I'm convinced some of you just like to *****.
Did you expect to buy a new coach with sticks? I don’t get your point. If you wanted Pope you were going to have to buy him out of his existing contract and then pay him a contract yourself…that applies to literally every single AD in the country if they wanted to hire a coach under agreement that has a buyout

That’s not the buyout I’m talking about. Pope had a buyout that if he left BYU for another job, he owed them $6 million. There was no such buyout in Cal’s contract.
You have your buyouts backwards. The buyout you’re speaking of is if he was fired without cause, UK would owe him money. The other buyout, where he would owe UK if he left for another job, was not in his contract.
Every business does run that way.
There’s no guaranteed return on advertising money spent.
My former company never used celebrity advertising until NIL came about.
We felt like we got a good return but not measurably better than not using them. We wanted to do it.
There’s no guarantees. And it will seek its own level. If business owners don’t feel they are getting a fair return they will spend elsewhere or less.
But there is always going to be an emotional factor to NIL.

Buyouts would certainly be interesting. It would give a lifeline to the mid majors who find and/or develop a good to great player. Some power conference grabs that guy, pays the buyout, and the mid major is all of a sudden flush with cash to fill out their roster.
