Just like last year, Pope over promised before the season started. This time though he got a little bit ahead of himself, talking about championship caliber team similar to 96-98 teams. Perhaps he got self blinded by the exorbitant NIL payroll of 22 M, thinking that if analytically the pieces seems to work , they will work in reality. Building a team is a tricky business. Last year he didn’t have much time to overthink, and he got the best available players , which also were super seniors who could learn his system on a fly….

This year is not working yet because :
1) returning players development and freshmen is way behind expectations . Chandler is the only one that shows an improvement but I suspect that is more because now he has a year of basketball under his belt than anything else. So, do we have the right helpers next to Pope on the bench ?

2) After the last year PG debacle , Pope didn’t learn . In his analytics maybe the PG position is not as important but this is hurting the team For a second year in a row.

3) Right after TN NCAA game, I was pleading that if Chandler, Noah , Garrison or Perry will play significant minutes this year we will not be good. Perry left us, Chandler , Garrison and Noah are still here. Okay Chandler is maybe an energy guy from bench but should not be a starter.
We did not get any starters from Portal for championship team . Everything we got were subs. The only starter we had one the team for getting number 9 is Oweh. However, he mentally, skills and attitude wise regressed big time after the nba feedback and new upgraded nil Paycheck.

4) the schedule was build heavy upfront , with little breaks between important games , which makes me wonder if Pope overestimated this team timeline development or he didn’t pay attention. The preparation for some games UL, MS and Gonzaga was horrible.

5) Pope is not sure what to do. I suspect that last year he consulted with Coach P, BUT this year they are playing each other….when you dont have the shooters to run your offense , as an experienced and smart coach you could adjust your offense and defense to fit the players you got for 22 M. Pope needs to go back to do drawing board and make adjustments based on the personal. He needs to assign coaches to specific players for development.

6} Pope and staff ‘s body language on the bench and side line is too passive and defeated. You cannot ask players to have a great body language when 6 coaches look defeated . These are not adults even if they received nil paychecks. These are young players that need to be demanded excellence. But that starts with coaches. Did Pope or any assistant got at least a warning from Refs this year? When coaches on the bench don’t show a pulse , how is the team supposed to improve or show any fight ?

I previously said that Coach Pope would need at least 2-3 years to develop the program. Unfortunately, Coach Pope over promised and overspend this summer , to the point where he lost a lot of the goodwill he had last year. I like Coach Pope but he needs to toughen up and make some decisions, on the personal ( coaching and players).

This season is still long, let’s make it more pleasant and develop these players, make some changes in the game strategy and win some games against ranked opponents. Starting next week Kentucky will not be ranked. We need to be strategic about our next games and Ws.

I really expect Coach Pope to make some changes. I am sure by now even the analytics are showing what we all can see. We don’t have shooters, we don’t have a PG , we don’t have dominant center or with passing abilities. We have 1/2 dozen of passive coaches, and a lot of horses players that would like to be developed and let be free to run.

our highest ceiling players are Jq, Moreno, Jela, Williams and Johnson. Please develop them and define role for everyone.

Last year’s team had shooters and gelled with Pope’s personality. This year not so much.

And fans are it up without seeing a product on the floor. Then following the Purdue exhibition fans took it even further.

Long before Pope they have over rated Ky teams, it didn't start with Pope. We always want to believe we are going to be great. Last year's team, only sweet 16, but was a really fun team, and beat several rated teams. It just turned really sour with this year's team, but I'm sure Pope really thought he had a great team. And with all pieces in place, hopefully things will get better, for us fans and for Pope.

No preparation for games. No preparation for team building.

The team is not in sharpe to play.

If the players care if they win they don’t show it.

If the players are giving effort it doesn’t show.

This is not about the losses. It’s about how we are losing.

Complete failure of leadership.

Yes, and Johnson needs to play a lot of point guard.

i agree.

also , our team is so out of shape and Pope’ solution is to go deeper onto rotation, instead of having them run and get them in shape. smh…

So like I was thinking yesterday how cool would it be if this team found a way to come back, love each other, and actually win the title. After this mess they found a way to make that happen. This team ends up #9 and a movie is made.

And we call them, the “unredeemables”.

What if that happened?

Or since it’s new age we could call them the lil’boos. Like a new age name? Would be attractive to young recruits.

Well I sound completely old as sht….

I don’t think the talent excuse holds up. Lowe was All-ACC. Took a lot of bad shots and somehow was still All-ACC. Someone thought there was talent.

Oweh pre-season SEC player of the year. Not saying that was totally deserved, but he’s the same guy who put Kentucky on his back against a tournament level Oklahoma team last year.

Kam played 30 minutes a game for an ok Tulane team. Should be starter level, but maybe the lights have been too bright.

DA was sixth man for the National Champion. Should be good enough to be at least 5th option for most anyone?

Mo D was a key rotation piece for Final Four and Elite Eight teams. That would be good enough for me. Talented enough to play meaningful minutes for a top 5 ish team.

JQ hasn’t played yet. Supposed to be a lottery pick.

Chandler was a top 40 prospect out of high school. He’s the age of a Senior. Can jump out of the gym and shoot the lights out. A little more than a bench guy.

Then we have a few pieces that should be able to contribute. Noah can shoot the lights out. Jelavic has some skill.

Play hard. Play together. Work on defense. Make the extra pass on offense. We have enough pieces to be a good team. I’ve seen plenty of teams go deep in the tournament with less talent but more heart and chemistry.

I really want to know what they practice? They may as well just show up on gameday because they would play the same.

Exactly. The idea this team isn’t talented is nonsense. They should easily be top 15 and a pick to battle for the SEC. Makes no sense to be this bad. I get irritated at this idea the team has no talent. That opinion is void of reality.

This team hates each other, there’s a faction inside and this is what happens when you pay players, agents control players, coaches no longer are in control, and you don’t remove cancers from the teams. Probably because they got paid and you can’t.

Take money out of this and I’d bet it would have never happened before whoever caused the problem would have been given a choice long ago to knock it off or pack your bags.

probably less practice also, they don’t live together, they didn’t gel together, and they’re all off doing separate things. That means they’ll be separate on the court. 20 year olds cannot usually handle millions they didn’t earn. Common sense.

also no contract. Oweh doesn’t have to care he got his money and isn’t coming back. He’s got nothing to work for. This is a busted system. I’d bet he’s already said it “I got my money”.

There is something wrong here that goes way beyond coaching and talent.

I too believe we have the individual to be competitive even without Lowe and JQ.

Then step up a couple notches when they do play.

I just can’t see it changing now though.

Whatever the cause it just looks like this team is too far gone for an overhaul and an overhaul is what it needs.
