Pope credits asst McLean for defensive plan last night

After we made a basket, the pressure on the inbound pass, and a brief show of a press was really slowing them down, and then our defense was able to set up very well once that was happening. The only concern I have about future games is our Achilles Hill has been three point shot defense and that wasn't an issue because that wasn't a big deal for Mississippi state so when we encounter our team that shoots the thrill a lot I'd like to see what defensive plan is for that

Maybe give the bulk of scouts to Mikhail? Would like us to mix in some zones and a couple all out full court presses.
McLean killed it. Pope should let him keep cooking and see if he can put together a good enough gameplan vs LSU and Tenn. I loved the more aggressive defensive schematics. 9 steals between two players? 🔥

Glad to hear we have SOME help from an assistant coach. Another problem i had with this season is that it appeared our assistant staff werent doing a whole lot to help prepare the team.

Every great coach needs helps from their assistants. Said this with Cal and ill say it with Pope: the head coach cant do *everything* for every single player. Thats where having a good staff helps.

I mean, what do you, as a fan, think you are going to see game by game that tells you whether assistants are doing anything at all?

When Cal was here, we had many reports and sightings of Chin at bars, etc, and even the report that he had never logged into the shot tracking practice system. But other than that, the assistant coaching criticisms are mainly just based on needing someone to blame if we are losing.

Only thing can say about our current assistant coaches is that they suck at recruiting and something needs to be done if he comes back. Problem is, like others have mentioned, I’m worried he’ll place loyalty over the wellbeing of our program.

Hard to place that on them when they were great before getting here and the JMI cloud seems to be really hampering recruiting. Alvin Brooks and Jason Hart both have reputations for being great recruiters.

I went back and watched the game along with the game before. The only thing I could tell was the hard hedge on screens, I think there was something else but could not put my finger on it.
Anyone else notice anything? (besides intensity or that simple full court fake press).

The hard hedge is so simple yet so effective, but what happens after is the most important part. The failover and defending the screener with another guy plus the hard hedge has to make that pass difficult to the slip screen.

I think we will have some decent offensive games, but we CANNOT grab difficult SEC wins without some good/great defense.
Turn that guy in to the defensive coach and let Pope focus on getting us good looks on offense.

I do like that Pope was humble enough to listen to an assistant and then publicly give him credit. Maybe in my brain he came in the conference room and said I am out of options does anyone have any suggestions? And this guy says I can fix the defense.

Assuming the assistants are competent, we should see a better product on the floor than we have seen most of this year. The head coach must utilize his assistants and draw on their strengths working as a TEAM to help the players develop and play together.

It really isn't about blaming the assistants when we are losing as much as it is blaming the entire staff, starting with Pope. It is his responsibility to choose and develop a staff who will work together with the goal of winning on the court. If assistants aren't doing their jobs and doing them well, it is his responsibility to make changes at the end of the year, as hard as that might be. I had a cancer on my last staff and after months of trying to make it work, I finally forced him out. It created other problems but we were able to now move forward.

Exactly my point. There were no calls for assistant coaches jobs last year, because the product was more acceptable. Pope is the one that should and will get all the blame, he constructed or signed off on this roster.

Nothing changed until the players just changed it. We came out playing hard but stupid. They played like they had never seen Miss St play before. And didn't know who Hubbard was.

That went on for 6-7 minutes. The boos were raining down. It just seemed like the players had enough. Pope stood there with his deer in the headlights look. We did guard Miss St a little more after that. With effort. not scheme.

Fortunately Miss St is as poorly coached as us and didn't change anything they did and they just stopped making shots.

The game clearly showed that our players are far better than they have been coached. We do not have a player problem.

This was almost like the players taking over in I think the '03 season for Tubby and just out playing their coaching.

Maybe this team will have a similar run? The only run we go on will be player driven. If they will get in shape. The coaching was unprepared and stupid subbing like always. The players were constantly asking out because they were winded.

No individual instruction. No conditioning program. Seeing it live is far worse than on TV. Hats off to those players that just went out there and played their asses off.

how do you know that though?
i'm not arguing with your theory, i think you're probably right actually. but do you have any evidence other than Pope had the same facial expression as he did vs the Zags and MSU?
Bc we passed the ball well in that 2nd half. it wasn't like we just iso'd our way to victory

This, and we were playing a Quad 3 game at home. You could see the team willing it to not let it slip and then MSU reverted to their Quad 3 ways.

The win was so impressive that not a single AP voter nor coach gave UK a top 25 vote. We should probably not over-analyze a Q3 game and instead see what happens next Saturday at UT (at LSU on Wed is a completely winnable Quad 1 if this team has any guts).

I guess I don’t know it. But I saw them unprepared at the beginning of the game.

We did play well from the 13 minute mark on. Or the 7 minute. However you want to count it.

The players played their asses off. They didn’t do anything different. We still played our high school offense and defense.

We just played hard. We didn’t go over screens much so that was different.

Miss St helped us quite a bit. But that’s wheel spinning as an effort win. Not a schematic win.
