How many players in the world does that pitch legitimately apply to?
60 picks a year. Many, if not most nowadays, will be guys overseas who stay overseas as opposed to playing a year in college. Also, a lot of the OADs or even 2 year guys are very raw projects who don't really mature and flourish until they're a few seasons or more into their pro career.
So yeah, even if we get those guys, we're not getting them at their most productive and a lot of them get tore up by run of the mill 3–4-year college players.
I don't disagree with the idea of striving to pitch the best and extending the invitation, however, when you make such a niche group the biggest part of your business model, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
Yeah, Cal got some great talent, and it did pay off when he was lucky enough to get the multi-generational exceptional unicorns. But overall, the thesis of OADs/NBA talent being able to sustain a program and win consistently at the expected level didn't pan out.
OADs and even NBA talent that hangs around another year doesn't net any more than building a team/program over the course of 3-4 years with good-great college players who will never sniff a combine.
