Yep. I was always opposed to the portal but came to see it as beneficial for those players for whom it became apparent that they would never see the field at their current school and had no NFL future. It gave them a chance to transfer somewhere they could actually play with the brief amount of time they had left. But now you have the guys in bad situation looking for good situations, the guys in good situations looking for the best situations.Just another data point that convinces me that recruiting rankings are becoming less and less meaningful.
I used to say "dont celebrate till they're on campus", but now you cant count on them even if they've been on campus, and on the sideline for a year or even more.
Oh well....
Yes, but because his last name was Manning, the team that got him had at least some assurance that he wasn't surrounded by a family of drama-producing knuckleheads and other hangers-on who would give the kid terrible advice in the never-ending quest for greener pastures. Whatever star rating his talent earned him, that additional assurance was probably worth an additional star. The fact that he remains at Texas means that he has proven more valuable to them than the other 7 QBs did to their original schools. It confirms my suspicion that star ratings aren't very accurate, especially for QBs. Manning would have been a 3 star if his last name was Smith.
You gotta love the Joe Burrow story.Yep. I saw mostly as a playing time thing but it's turned into players chasing CFP appearances.
Yeah. He was a grad transfer, so a bit different but, yeah, he saw he was gonna be sitting behind Haskins and time was running out.You gotta love the Joe Burrow story.
And maybe not the entire season in some casesThe days of building a "program" for the long-term are gone. Now you are building a team for the next season. I don't like that. I suspect most fans don't.
Todd Ellis came before Taneyhill.Remember back in the day when quarterbacks weren't expected to even sniff the field at least until their junior year.
I just thought of this... did Tannyhill unofficially start the " Freshman QB starter" phenomenon?
I'm not sure how much it has to do with the star rating as opposed to players just want to play immediately. Nobody wants to wait their turn, particularly a 5* who has everyone whispering in his ear that he's a generational talent. Also, players aren't willing to battle through adversity or challenging circumstances. Just transfer and start new somewhere else.It confirms my suspicion that star ratings aren't very accurate, especially for QBs. Manning would have been a 3 star if his last name was Smith.
