Walter Clayton Jr.

Old school: Iona

Clayton won MAAC Player of the Year while leading Iona in scoring and helping the Gaels to an NCAA Tournament appearance as a sophomore. The 6-2 guard hit 43.1% of his 3-pointers on 5.2 attempts per game and also averaged 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals. He has the makings of a high-major contributor.

Noah Fernandes

Old school: UMass

Fernandes made 45.2% of his 3-pointers and 50% of his 2-pointers while averaging 4.1 assists in 11 games for UMass before injuries ended his 2022-23 season. The 5-11 point guard was similarly productive for the Minutemen in 2021-22 and is capable of making an impact for an NCAA Tournament caliber team.

Fardaws Aimaq

Old school: Texas Tech

Aimaq is the former WAC Player of the Year at Utah Valley who transferred to Texas Tech last season but played in just 11 games because of injuries. In that limited action, the 6-11 center averaged 11.1 points and 7.9 rebounds, which demonstrated that he can be productive in a rugged league. Aimaq is a serviceable rim protector and has shown the ability to step out and make 3-pointers over the past two seasons.

Joe Bamisile is once again in the portal. Decommitted from NU, went to VaTech, transferred to GW, then to Oklahoma. Looking for his 4th university.

The one name that’s on this list that NU must go after is Zach Clemence from Kansas he could shoot the three pretty well from what I did read and he is good friends with Ty Berry as they went to sunrise Christian Academy together so we gotta pull up that friendship card. Plus he had a NU offer out of High school.

Chris Collins is probably going to be very selective about pursuing any transfers until Buie, Audige and Beran decide. If all three come back and nobody else transfers, he has one scholarship to use. I’m assuming he would want to maximize that one. And by the way, when is the last time NU filled its entire complement of 13 scholarships?

There is a Harvard kid in the portal that seems to have interest from everyone including Michigan UConn and other big name programs.

I would have to consult with Ignore to answer that question!

I believe it was actually 2012-13. Cobb was suspended for the season but all 13 spots were filled.

Fwiw, here’s my brother’s assessment (huge KU fan, rarely misses a game): “He seemed promising as a freshman. But seemed to regress this year. thinks he can shoot the three, but can’t. gets pushed around in the paint, makes mental errors, shows flashes being a pretty good player when he gets minutes though.”

But Alex was resurrected by NU.

Good chance he already knows with great certainty what's going to happen.

If he does not, he would be a fool to not assume they are gone. He's on the clock with the portal.

A lot of freshmen go through that but here he would not have to worry about all the hype that is around any Kansas recruit so he’d be able to develop at his own pace.

Serious question - if you are Chris Collins, do you want Robbie Beran to come back or are you trying to upgrade?

I'd want to try to upgrade, for sure.
If all three come back, and we have three scholarship players coming in, we'll have room for two, correct?

Old players are valuable. Beran is a solid player, and I think he could really blossom in another year. I'd bring in another 4 to provide more beef and flexibility against foul trouble/injuries/bad matchups.

I'd also target a PG with at least 3 years left.

Room for 1 if all three come back.

35 of the top 100 most experienced teams made the tourney and 20 of the top 50. 5 of the top 20 are still alive. By contrast only 1 of the bottom 50 and 11 of the bottom 100 made the tourney and none are left.

Of the other 3 remaining teams still alive, FAU and Creighton were both top 100 in % minutes returning, leaving only UConn as a team that is not super experienced or returning a lot of minutes.

It would be interesting to see the summary of the average ages of say the seven players with the most minutes per tournament team - how that has tracked over the past several years and how that compares to non-tournament teams. Likely covid's bonus years had an effect with the average age increasing overall, but I also wonder whether the portal has also had an effect where tournament teams have been more successful in bringing in experienced players than non-tournament teams.

Older players are better defenders.

I don’t think this is a good take, the NIL group putting a full package together and Boo and Audige taking the time to compare that to their G League potential is critical to this decison, and that probably isn’t all resolved or done being out together yet. It’s only been 9 days since the last game!

FWIW, Denver Anglin has a ton of upside. He played little at G-Town, so his stats look bad, but he can shoot. Some considered him the best shooter in the '22 class. Was recruited by strong academic school coming out of HS.

Cormac Ryan is available and would fit what Collins likes to do. Could be a solid 6th or 7th man. My guess is that Shrewsberry won't recruit him to return to ND. Ryan's second choice way back when coming out of prep school was NU, after Stanford.
