Jaden Akins, a 6-3 PG playing at Farmingdale High School, listed NU among his favorites on a tweet posted yesterday:

I haven't seen confirmation that he's been offered, but I wouldn't doubt it. I saw him play last year as a freshman, and my impression is that he's a solid high major D-1 prospect. Uses nice moves to drive to the basket, can shoot under pressure from outside, good body language.

I presume O’s and I’s means “offers and interests” (or perhaps, “offereds and interesteds”).

Good body language? Seriously?

Yes, seriously. When his team was getting roasted and melting down, he continued to go about his business and remain composed instead of showing anguish and frustration, which speaks to his maturity as a sophomore last year.

Maybe you think it's a silly thing to focus on, but you'd be wrong. I was just talking to a coach with college experience about this the other day. Being able to keep your emotions in check and channel frustration productively is especially important in basketball. There are no pads or helmets to hide behind, and the crowd is a couple of feet away.

In soccer players lose scholarship opportunities because they have their hands on their hips.

Now it's your turn to tell me how I'm wrong.

Don’t disagree with you on competitiveness and rising to the occasion. Thinking you can evaluate that from a couple moments on a highlight tape is foolish. Takes college coaches hours of legwork to figure out the right “fit.”

“I saw him play last year.”

Hours. HOURS. And most of the homework not off of tape or in-game.
That’s fine. We’re amateurs, bro. It’s okay for someone who has seen a kid play say that he liked things about the kid.

Doesn’t mean that the coaching staff feels the same way necessarily, just means that somebody liked watching him play.

Your criticism was that OP was “foolish” (seriously??) because he was making evaluations from a “couple moments on a highlight tape”. I simply pointed out that he made evaluations based on watching him IRL. (Your reading comprehension is *terrible*.)

But now you’re criticizing him for not talking to guidance counselors and teachers and the janitorial and paraprofessional staff to see if he’s respectful. What’s your line — “goalposts moved”?

Thanks for your first-hand, amateur-but-not-an-idiot scouting report, @elgatoloco .

And I promise you, @gocatsgo2003 , that spending a few years looking at prospect transcripts in a different sport in a different decade doesn’t make you an expert, as much as you wish it did.

(I especially like that you think body language matters. It’s just that OP is not sufficiently qualified to evaluate it.)

Never said I thought body language matters.

Never said I thought body language matters.

It does matter. But it is no more than one of several relatively important things to keep an eye on. And it can be deceiving at times.

Akins is obviously a special hoops talent. Amazing assortment of skills for just a sophomore in HS.

Upon further reflection, I guess you didn’t. You referenced other intangibles that could be inferred based in part on body language, but not body language specifically.

Regardless, OP provided a first-hand opinion.
You’ve provided nothing but criticism of OP. (And, pointing the irony-coated thumb, I’ve provided nothing but criticism of your criticism.)

Your first post in this thread was not designed to do anything but insult OP, while your second post in this thread reflects that your reading comprehension is lacking. Your third post simply moved the goalposts to protect your own fragile ego from your awful first two posts. If you have no value to add, perhaps you shouldn’t post.

You’ve got good knowledge on lots of things. I wish you would use that to add value, rather than insult.

If there's a forum where only professionals get together and talk about recruits, maybe you'd be happier there. I understand what the recruiting process entails, but I think it's understood around here that we're all just shooting from the hip.

Body language: I still don't know why you're arguing about the importance of it. It's bizarre, really.

You're right. I should have reframed my answer.

"We genuinely appreciate the expertise you bring to this forum. There's so much we can learn from you. I'm so sorry that I have trouble ignoring the conversations I've had with college/high-school coaches and players about the importance of body language, as well as the specific incidents of players being yelled at for not exhibiting proper body language, along with the many, many videos and articles discussing the issue available to anybody who bothers to do a Google search. I would be grateful if you could point me toward any resources that will educate me."

That should come in handy at NU
