Battleship is essentially a probability/density problem.

You can eliminate half the squares on your initial search, and then start from the center, using "spokes"

It doesn't remove all of the luck, but it massively reduces it. SAR missions use this all of the time.

There ARE a few strategies in this, that give you a 90 percent plus chance to win.

I played this board game hundreds of times when I was younger. My SIL recently challenged me to a game with a brand new version. They’ve reversed the ranks. 10 is highest. 9s are next highest. 2s are minors. I couldn’t keep it straight after so many years of using the older version. It was weird. He kicked my ***.
