Cats start at #51............seems pretty strange overall as MD is all the way down at #24 and Wisky is the top Big 10 team despite all their key player losses. Anyway, fun to see some expectations for the Cats for a change. Could be a special season........

I want to say he had the Cats in the low 70's last year prior to the start.

Six Big Ten teams are in the top 25.

10 are in the top 64 with NU ninth among Big Ten teams.

If the Big Ten performs exactly as projected NU doesn't get in. The selection committee is not taking nine teams from the Big Ten.

Nebraska, which I believe was top 15 preseason last year has dropped to Siberia.

Maryland 6th in the conference is very strange though. Eyeballs need to be added at this time of the year, and his computer obviously doesn't have an artificial intelligence vision component. Ken, see .http://vision.ri.cmu.edu/ .

If nine teams from the Big Ten belong in the tournament, then that's what they are to do. Doesn't matter if nine teams from Pluto belong in the tournament; if that is indeed the case, then the committee exists to put them in. Otherwise, that committee isn't doing its job, and should be replaced.

with the automatic bids all of the top 64 never get into the tournament

last year, the most recent example, Minny finished the year ranked 58 and wasn't let in. I think seven Big Ten teams made the cut

of course that's using Pomeroy

and, those 10 Big Ten teams have to play each other so there'll be enough losses to push a couple out of the top 64

I understand about the AQ thing, Medill; however, roughly half the field is made up of at-large teams. In a typical year, there are about six Big Ten teams that are obvious choices. What I'm saying is that if three other Big Ten teams deserve selection, then that's what should happen. In and of itself, "We already have eight teams from the Big Ten" is NOT a valid reason to exclude a ninth.

Sounds about right, if the cats can over perform expectations by 2 or 3 Big ten wins then I think a tournament birth would be likely.

Most prognosticators seem to have us around 6 to 7 conference wins. But even 10-8 would not be a lock with our putrid non-conference schedule, though getting to 10 would probably require us to beat some very good teams. (You did say it was 'likely,' and on that we agree.)

A 10-8 Big 10 record, plus one win in the Big 10 tournament, would put NU in the NCAA Tournament. There have only been 2 Big 10 teams in the last 10 years with 10 wins who didn't make the Tournament (Illinois and OSU).

Auto bids have a hge impact on this making very hard to get that many in. Basically you have to have a 0.500 in conference or it is hard to justify the conversation. And it is tough to get 9 teams with a 0.500 or better record in conference.

Absolutely right, Hdhntr, and that's exactly my point -- it may well be mathematically improbable, but if we DID have nine deserving teams, then nine should get in. All I'm saying is that there's no place for reasoning along the lines of, "We've already got enough Big Ten teams" if there are more that are deserving, and the at-large spots exist. Hard to deny, though, that a hell of a lot of things would have to fall just right in order to have a case for nine teams getting in. Love to see it, though.

Penn State went 21-10 (10-8) in 2009, won their first BTT game, and ended up in the NIT.
