Princeton upsets #2 seed Arizona

Nice win by #15 seed Princeton beating second seed Arizona. The Tigers ended the first half with an 8-0 run and the 2nd half on a 9-0 run. Not a great game by Arizona. This is why the Big Dance can be so fun to watch when upsets like this occur.

Reminder that Princeton is coached by former NU assistant coach Mitch Henderson! Great win for him and the program.

"The Smart Take from the Strong"- an interesting easy read. Pete Carril was a basketball savant. Many do not realize that Geoff Petrie hired Pete and for 15 years he was an assistant at Sacramento after he left Princeton. The Princeton offense worked in the NBA. Pete died last year but there are still a few coaches employing the Princeton Offense-Henderson(Princeton) and Mooney(Richmond)

Also Joe Scott at Air Force Academy. At least I think he still employs it there, as he's always been a strong proponent.

I have liked Princeton for 50 years, but not as much as I have loved Penn, who have been rivals for the Ivy League championship over all that time. This year Princeton beat Penn in the Ivy tournament, and here they are. Ivy league basketball is by no means shabby.

In watching highlights, it appears that Henderson is not running the rigid ‘Princeton offense’ of Carril and Carmody.

I even saw an offensive rebound, definitely not a part of the PO.

This Philly guy remembers the Big 5 games at the Palestra in the ‘70s, and how the schools spoofed each other with roll-out banners. At one Penn/Villanova game the Penn students rolled out a banner that read Nova women love Chubby Cox.

I was there during that time. Heady days for Penn and the Big 5.. I remember in particular Penn vs. South Carolina, which Penn won.

Wasn't Big 5 hoops on Channel 17 in Philadelphia? 6th thru 9th grades we lived in Plymouth Meeting outside of the City. Doubleheaders at the Palestra, maybe on Wednesday nights? Great coaching in the Big 5 in those days. Dr. Jack at St. Joe (they had a drummer who sat at the top of the stands beating his drum, "Let's go, St. Jo"). Bilsky and Wohl at Penn (coached by Dick Harter), with Corky Calhoun up front. Tom Gola may have been coaching at LaSalle. Harry Litwack was at Temple -- he'd been there since my Dad was in school after coming home after the Air Force. 'Nova had Jack Kraft. Great basketball back in those days -- it was probably a bigger deal to win the Big Five than it was to win your conference.

Princeton yesterday hung tough and kept on missing shots to take the lead. I was in the stands for the game and told my friend once they hit that shot they were not going to give up the lead. That's what happened. Their Center/power forward Egwobowman (spelling) is quite a player for which Arizona had no answer for. The only player on Arizona who is a real threat is Tubelis. The rest of their team is pretty average

Yes to all of that! And the LaSalle Explorer was a guy in a space suit. And Corky Calhoun was from Waukegan. And Big Al Meltzer did the broadcasts. Good times.

That busted me as I had AZ going a long way. That said, I did have IL and IA going down in first round (MD as well so not perfect) I also had PSU goig a ways and NU winning a revenge game against Gonzaga

The Big 5 at the Palestra was a big deal for many years. Dick Harter was an unknown ,coaching Rider, but had an extraordinary career at Penn and afterwards. He passed away on Hilton Head about 10 years ago

Chuck Daly followed Harter at Penn and was the coach who really put Penn on the map. I remember sitting on the college green one Spring day, and who walks by but John Wooden..
