PSU: How do we parlay wrestling success into academic success?

We all remember Joe’s speech to the bot in January 1983 after winning the NATTY. . One could argue that it worked for a while. PSU’s academic profile started to improve in the ‘80s. Football OBVIOUSLY. was not the direct cause, but football gave PSU an audience (raised awareness) and, importantly, represented PSU very well. Of course, erickson and bot subsequently and famously f*cked it all up.

Today, the bot is still dog crap. Neeli is nowhere near as bad as erickson, but she may not be the leaderer we need either. This is what we have to work with.

We probably can’t leaderer our way out of this mess. So, what can PSU brag about? Football had a good year and is huge, but wrestling is top dog. Cael is the man.

PSU should do anything and everything to promote wrestling success. We need something positive to talk about. Make people care. Academics may remain sh|t, but we can try to use wrestling to raise our profile.

One might make a case for women’s volleyball given its popularity, but is PSU really back? This past season’s NATTY. is great, but the jury is still out. On the other hand, PSU owns college wrestling.

Maybe nothing can help our academics at this point, but why not pull out all the stops?

Shut down all the branches . Raise tuition . Bobby Flay or similar as the chef . Premium dorms like a Ritz Carlton for an upcharge . Baristas and masseuse in the lobby. Make it more selective and pay through the nose . People want what they can’t have .

Problem is very little interest in NCAA wrestling.

I've been pestering the sports editor of the Washington Post the last two years about the need for a profile of Cael Sanderson and the PSU wrestling program, which some have cited as the greatest dynasty in collegiate sports history. His response is always limited resources and insufficient interest. Even though local school VT sent 8 to the NCAAs.

What convinced me that it's a hopeless cause was that over the weekend there was not even a mention in their sports roundup section, yet there was something about the women's ice hockey Frozen Four. Go figure.

I hope Cael keeps his wrestling program running full speed ahead, but if he stumbles, retires or transfers, who cares?

PSU was once a respectable academic institution. The Board of Distrutees has already ruined most everything.

They’re now more interested (and desperate) to generate revenue from “out of state” tuition to “out of country”.

It will all end soon… and not in a good way. But it won’t be my problem either.

Penn State has roughly the same attendance (at Main Campus) that Michigan does, but they accept 55% of applicants whereas Michigan accepts about 17%. Michigan is a top 20 overall university. What are they doing that Penn State can't/won't?
