Do they normally have that many damn stadiums? Why? Also they look amazing, well worth the 20,000 people that'll die building them.

I wonder what will happen if the US/Mexico get awarded the bid for 2026....I mean we have plenty of stadiums but Fifa wants grand, SOCCER-SPECIFIC stadiums. But I agree though, many of our football stadiums aren't conducive for having a great environment for a soccer game... You would think we would at least build 1...

Why? Do they have that many games going on at once?

Well, you have 32 teams, 8 groups of four. There are 6 games minimum per group. So there 48 games just in group play plus 16 games from knockout stage on. So a grand total of 64 games. It was held in 31 days. You essentially had a venue per group, then a venue for each round of the knockout round.

Brazil was a special case though, they didn't have any pre-existing stadiums that were up to par to support a World Cup Crowd. South Africa was very similar in 2010 as well, they built 10 new stadiums. in 2006 Germany Barely built anything. They just upgrade existing ones. I think Russia built 4, and looks like Qatar is building 5 brand new. Each World Cup post 2000 has had 12 total venues.

The real question is 'what's Qatar's drone game like?' -- we gonna be gettin' some bitchin overhead shots of random-*** ball kicking or what?

It's sad that OP clearly condones slave labor. I wonder how many impoverished Pakistanis will be poured into the foundation of that building.

All so people can watch the most boring sport on earth.

You want to see something sad, Google what the stadiums in Brazil are being used for now....

They had a brief segment on this during the Olympics -- most of the stadiums are white elephants now.

Particularly bad is the multi-million dollar stadium at Manaus, at the mouth of the Amazon, which has no local team with a large following. It's not be used at all. Manaus has a history of white elephants. It's also home to a lavish opera house built in 1897 to lure tenor Enrico Caruso to perform there. That extravagant palace was largely unused during the 20th century going 90 years without a performance.

They are just safety retreats for the wealthy when the poor of the favelas break free.

So, Ive never understood why cities want to hold the world cup/olympics. If they have to build, it's shown they don't make money...or am I wrong?

They're going to expand the world cup to 40 teams but you could still have it in 8 stadiums, although the US would probably spread it out to 12 or more. Other than a few modifications, the US wouldn't have to do anything. Heck, they could have this thing next week if we had to. We probably have 40+ stadiums that could hold it right now.

By 2026 you would have the new LA stadium, Jerry's World, Probably Oakland's Stadium in Vegas, The new Mercedes Benz Arena in Atlanta, The Vikings new stadium that will all be brand new and top tier quality. Then you have the Rose Bowl, the Coliseum is getting a 170 million dollar renovation, Seattle, San Francisco's new stadium and a ton of college places like the shoe in Ohio and The Big House...

**** the state of Texas alone could host the world cup and not have to build. Texans, Cowboys, aTm new stadium, Baylor's brand new stadium, Cotton Bowl, Texas Longhorns possibly expansion team in San Antonio.... I'm just glad we have people like Pele, Maradonna, Ronaldinho, The Brazilian Ronaldo allnvery adamantly saying the US needs to host a world cup ASAP. The turnout for it would be phenomenal IMO.

How do you think a 40 team world cup works logistically? Right now it's 8 groups of 4, top two advance to knockout.

Do u go 8 groups of 5, and expand the knockout round to incorporate some the best 3rd place teams? How does a 40 team playoff look logistically in your eyes?

I would love it if they moved to groups of 5, but I don't think they will. I think it will end up being 10 groups of 4 and the top 24 move to the next round.

I'd prefer if it were 8 groups of 5 and the top 16 move on.

New Fifa President Infantino wants 8 groups of 5 with a top 16. I guess we will wait and see. I just hope we get the 2026 World Cup. Would be great for the sport and our country...even if we share the bid with Mexico.
