QB Starter against UK

I'm firmly in the Bolin camp because I much prefer the power spread. However, I would not be surprised at all if Lamar gets the start against UK. If you look at UK's results this year, they have been shredded by read-option QBs (Miss St 42 points, Tenn 52 points, Auburn 30 points, EKU 27 points).

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Given UK's results, I wonder if it does matter. Is there something schematically about their defense where they struggle with read-option? Perhaps it is because that Elam guy is terrible.

My best guess is that Bolin gets the start, and we see how that goes. We know our offense is more explosive with Bolin under center...when he gets time to throw and when he is accurate. If he can't get the ball moving, I think Petrino won't hesitate to go with Jackson.

Petrino was upset about Lamar not stepping into pocket and giving up on plays too quickly. I realize the oline sucks, but generally you have to stick with the process to maximize the Petrino playbook.

Bolin shredded basically the same LPT team last year. But supposedly, they're vulnerable to a mobile QB.

My preference is that both kids get a significant number of snaps. Maybe start Jackson and bring in Bolin to play the 2nd quarter unless Jackson is unstoppable. Then, go with the hotter hand or alternate quarters.

I'm not crazy about either kid playing most of the snaps and the other team preparing for him as starter. None of our QBs are good enough...

Yep, their were a few times that Lamar panicked (understandably with our line) and ran right into the pressure that was being funneled out of the pocket.

Growing pains.

Apparently JHC has dirt on the coaches. It is inexplicable why he continues to play. Pitt manhandled our d-line and was able to get 2nd level blocks

I would be surprised if Bolin does not start. Then bring in Jackson on an occasional play like the Virginia game. Of course if Bolin struggles again we will see Jackson sooner. I just don't think Jackson is 100 % yet he seems to be a little gimpy still with that ankle still.

Really good point. We are scoring enough lately to win most games. It's the defense against quality opponents that have cost us games.

I never sit down and watch sUcK play in any sport but from what I hear their pass defense is awful. I would have to go with Bolin he destroyed them last year. I am not sure if he would benefit from waiting until the 2nd quarter like he did last year.
That way he can see what the sUcK defense is doing and how to play them. I sure would like to get that win in Lexington.

I think we need both prepared with gameplans that fit them individually and test the waters and see what works.

Pass needs to get here asap, gain muscle and learn the playbook.

I don't think it much matters who starts. All 3 will play. I'm still waiting for all 3 to be in the game at the same time. UofK wouldn't know what to expect. You could even use Lamar and Reggie as decoys and go deep to Quick or Staples. The possibilities are endless! :eek:

Let's recap what 'zipp' has been right about lately against waves of posters who debated him...
  • Our recent opponents have been overrated, and our performance in those games was not a good indicator of improvement.
  • The QB Derby was not over, and Bolin wasn't necessarily the answer (at least this year).
  • The Petrino offense will not morph back to the power spread or pro style or whatever the nostalgists wanna call it.
  • Petrino has changed the style of QB he's bringing in as a result.
  • Petrino calls all of the offensive plays.
  • LPT was not improved.
  • Many of our fans live in denial.
That's a pretty good list off the top of my pointy little head. Whether I'm alone or not depends on how many posters wanna recognize the obvious... :D

Now let's tick off those things that the "waves of posters" have been right about about while at the same time, correcting the nonsense on the list zipp has composted, I mean compiled above.

  • UofL is a very average football team this year on both sides of the ball. With that said, they have a very good record against other average teams - losing only to one - auburn. Louisville has two average to good QBs that have at times both looked good and at other times had their deficiencies exposed. At this point neither one of them could be considered the answer, but it's clear what type of offense Petrino prefers AS HE'S SAID IT - and it sure ain't the read option.
  • Even factoring in his groundbreaking 10 second radio interaction with Petrino, zipp has as much understanding of the offensive play calling as the average ladybird. Additionally for all of his busy work with stats, it's clear that zipp doesn't really understand the game of football, nor will he anytime soon. This is evidenced by his silly - yet steadfast - belief that: Petrino's offense has changed, rather than it being a case of him adapting to his current personnel; Petrino is only recruiting read option / dual threat QBs, despite the fact that 60% of Louisville's offers have gone to pro style QBs and, the kid (J Pass) he is mainly referring to is on record as saying that he is coming to UofL so as not to be in a read option offense; that the running game is not more successful when the QB is under center; and finally that Teddy Bridgewater was a dual threat QB who Petrino would have had running the read option.
As for the yuts, kudos to being one of literally thousands of people (including yut fans) to recognize that they weren't very good (again) - you using this to highlight your expertise is the same as saying jumping gets you closer to the sun. Lastly, it's the recognition by those of us that do understand football of the obvious reasons stated above, that leaves you alone.

I say play them both and whom ever gives us the best chance to beat them down go with. They are all Cards and we support them all. Some favor one over the other that's fine. This is our board and we will have our debates, but in the big picture we all want the same thing a WIN. Go Cards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
