Question about recruiting success...

I know many of the posters that have more information about recruiting than I do mention how important Capel and Scheyer (these 2 in particular) have been to recent recruiting success. It is often pointed out that they are the point guys on a particular recruit.

My question is what do you attribute that success to? As a biased fan I would say it's one hell of an institution to get to sell, but is it more about relatability? If so, is it more advantageous to have a younger staff because they may relate more to these kids?

It's probably an ignorant question, but I was just curious. Thanks.

My experience in that world has been that there are basically two types of recruiters, those that come off like used car salesmen and sell a product and promise a great deal up front. And, those because of their "prominence" can to some degree dictate terms up front "you may have to wait...best players play...can't promise anything but would love to have your talent..."Duke is a home of which you will be apart of for the rest of your life" (Bilas) " as common refrains. Of the latter Smith, Knight, and K come to mind, this sets up a more coachable kid once you get them and screens a lot of problems. As to why this approach has been working with the OAD of late at Duke I'm not exactly sure...but honestly, consistency, results, and a honest shot a playing time makes it appealing for top tier talent who are confident enough in their ability to trust their basketball chops to that open forum for paying time. The more obvious selling points of success, exposure, and academics only help. And, yes Capel and Schyer and K, I dought have been _outworked_ for any recruit.

I have no doubt in my mind that he relative youth and the personalities of Scheyer and Capel have had a huge effect. That is merely one of the appealing elements. Playing in Cameron is great. Playing on national TV more than most NBA teams is great. Having such a great academic institution is great. But ultimately, it all goes back to Coach K. He is the trump card. Playing for him is an honor and privilege in every way.

I think the Duke brand is numero uno. But there are other factors at play too.

For one, Coach K coaching the Olympic team has helped a ton. Six years ago many locals thought it was hurting, and our rivals down the street loved it because Duke seemed to be in a funk and were happy he was taking his time to coach that team. Fast forward to now, and it's obviously helped, and opposing fans think he should be required to step down.

About recruiting, like I said, first and foremost it's the guy at the helm. But I also think Capel, James and Scheyer have rejuvenated some things as well. Don't get me wrong, that's not a slight on Collins and Wojo. Both of those guys played huge parts in securing pieces from last season's national championship team. Huge parts.

Right now Duke is riding a lot of momentum and many things in our favor. It has a way of vanishing quickly. Trust us, it wasn't less than five or six years ago where bad news on a recruiting front seemed to be kind of regular. Whether that was Brandan Wright, Greg Monroe, or Harrison Barnes....we weren't getting those main targets like we are now.

We say it often, and I know it's cliche, but the cycles can be up and down.

All we have are assumptions about how recruiting really works. It's like the US Government. None of us have any idea what the President's real intentions are. We just do the best we can with the info that trickles down. My guess about recruiting is the young guys do the leg work, act confident and K and that beautiful campus closes the deal.

lol Tim thinking same thing, whoa Jim actually got one wrong. Guess Jim's batting average is about 99% now!

On topic.

I think it starts with K. Almost always when a kid commits he talks about the honor of getting to play for K. I think K himself is a huge recruiting piece. Not exactly even him working the kids, just his name and rep. It really does alot, a whole lot. Plus he's a pretty awesome recruiter himself. His USA connection is finally paying dividends,

I think Capel is the next piece. Awesome recruiter and I think kids really find him easy to relate to and get to know. I think he's been a massive for us.

Next is the Duke brand. Incredible history, facilities and program is extremely attractive.

A lot of valid points. I think one of the biggest things relates to K's work with Team USA. I think K's work with Team USA has blown some of the "myths" about K out of the water. Think of all of the negative recruiting that just can't be done, or, just plain backfires. Sounds simple, but how many elite athletes previously had a preconceived notion that Duke and or K just wouldn't or even couldn't be right for them. Now you have guys like Kobe and Lebron gushing about playing for K. Then you have guys who didn't look at Duke for college, but now rave about him-Chris Paul, Durrant, etc. Add to this the high school guys playing for USA basketball. I think this just destroys 99% of the negative talk and or misconceptions that kept a fair percentage of elite athletes from legitimately considering Duke. Now think what that does for the kid who previously was on the fence that Duke lost by a whisker. Just one additional recruiting win every couple of years can make a huge difference.
