Question Regarding Stats...

This probably a basic question for you guys, but what actually constitutes a steal? Is it knocking the ball away or taking possession? If it is the latter, if one defensive player knocks the ball away and another defensive player gains possession, which player gets credit for the steal?

I think DukieJay can speak to this better, but stats are dictated by the statisticians. And they are subjectively objective.
